Mom was born and grew up in beautiful historic
Ottawa, Illinois, on the south side. She met her future soul mate, Jack, a west sider, in their Junior year in 1950. They were married August 5, 1956, at First Methodist Church in Ottawa, and celebrated an incredible 69 years together of mutual loving and caring, active lives with family and friends always at the centerpiece.
Mom graduated from Ottawa High School in 1952. She then attended and graduated from Illinois State Normal University with an Elementary Education Degree and started teaching Fourth grade at Oakland Grade School in the fall of 1956, shortly after the school opened in 1951. Later, she was a substitute teacher for many schools in Bloomington.
Sue and Jack loved to travel, both within the United States, visiting all 50 states, and abroad having visited 7 continents and nearly 60 countries. They loved traveling with Sally and Darrell, their dear friends RJ and Judy, as well as family. Some of the most memorable places they visited were Russia, the Great Wall of China, Germany during Oktoberfest, they went on an African Safari, boated down the Amazon River, Visited Australia, took a cruise to Alaska, and on a trip to Rome, visited with Vatican and had an audience with Pope Saint John Paul II. But her favorite trips were with family to celebrate their 50th Anniversary with a Caribbean Cruise, their 60th anniversary to England, Ireland and Wales, and their 65th to Hilton Head, South Carolina.
In addition to traveling, they were very active taking annual canoe trips to Wisconsin, but mostly in Missouri, on the Current and Jack Forks Rivers.
For many years, Mom and her close-knit group of dear lady friends, Judy, Nancy, Elfie, Sallie, Alice, Lois, Norma, Sue, Rita, Mary, and Dorothy, met daily for coffee at Times Past and monthly for bridge.
Mom was known for her sweet, gentle, loving and caring disposition to her circle of friends and her family, especially her grandchildren, and great grandson.
She was a great family style cook and particularly appreciated for her Christmas cookies and candies each year, most notably her Snickerdoodles, which will be missed dearly.
Mom was very gifted at crafts, needlepoint, and in later years, producing beautiful colored pencil drawings.
Mom was a tough old gal; she battled and beat breast cancer three times.
Mom was a collector of antique salt dishes, the predecessor to modern day saltshakers, and a member of nationwide organizations of Salt Dishes. Over her lifetime, she collected approximately 2000 of these.
A faithful and regular member of 2nd Presbyterian Church since 1977, Mom and Dad rarely every missed Sunday services, until just recently.
Mom will soon be reunited with her beloved Grandson, Joey. Until we meet again, Sue, Mom, Gramma and dear friend, you will be missed more than you'll ever know.
