Marina C. Phelps, 87, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 25, 2024 in a care residence in Peoria, Illinois.
She was born in Peoria, Illinois on July 18, 1936 to George and Nicoletta Chiames. She married Craig Phelps on December 30, 1961 in Chicago, Illinois. Preceding her in death are her parents and husband.
Survivors include her sister Athena 'Penny' Chiames-Cooper of Denver, Colorado, her brother Nicholas 'Nick' Chiames of Peoria, Illinois, her nephew George Chiames of Peoria, Illinois, nephew Matthew 'Matt' Chiames (Regina) and his daughters Marina Chiames and Nicoletta Chiames of Nashville, Tennessee, and cousins in Illinois, Texas and California.
Marina was a graduate of Woodruff High School in Peoria, Illinois and MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Illinois and maintained relationships from these schools for many decades. She worked as an assistant to her husband, Craig Phelps, who was a Chapter 13 trustee for the bankruptcy court of the Northern District of Illinois and managed a large office staff.
She was a member of the Chicago Chamber Music Society from 1966 and served as President from 1995-1997. She also served as Chairman of the By-Laws Committee, created the Chamber Music performance history, and served as a Member-at Large on the Executive Committee.
Marina was also a member of The Fortnightly of Chicago from 1995 and served on the Board as treasurer from 2007-2009. She also served on the Nominating Committee which was a tremendous honor and was a founding member of the planned giving arm of both The Fortnightly and HPFF (Historic Preservation Foundation of the Fortnightly.)
Our dear Marina was conscientious and thorough with everything she did. She valued her family and friends very much. She was interested in them, caring and generous. She also reciprocated kindnesses shown to her. She had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed social gatherings and was fun to be with. We were blessed to have her in our lives.
She was a member of the All Saints Greek Orthodox Church.

My deepest condolences to the family. So many great memories of our boating adventures together along with the Captains Craig and Frank. What fun! As she would often say!
