Marion C. Vander Plaats, age 99, of Colton, SD, passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025 at Dow Rummel Village and Senior Living in Sioux Falls, SD.
Memorial service will be at 2:00 PM Friday, April 25, 2025 at Faith Community Church in Colton, SD with Pastor Randall Questad officiating. Burial with immediate family will take place prior to the service at 1:00 PM in the Colton Cemetery.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 24th from 5 – 7 PM at the Minnehaha Funeral Home of Colton.
Marion C. Vander Plaats was born to Peter and Winnie (Van Hunnik) Vander Plaats on October 31, 1925 at his home place west of Colton, SD which he later bought and farmed. He grew up in and went to school in the Colton Franklin area. He served in the Army as an MP from 1945 to 1946.
He was a lifelong member of the Colton Christian Reformed Church (Faith Community) where he married Ann Meyerink on February 21, 1950. He served as deacon and usher many times. They lived and farmed near Colton until 1997 when they moved into town. Marion was a wonderful host and loved to serve delicious snacks and treats at family gatherings. He also loved the Christmas season and couldn’t decorate enough for it. In 2015 they moved to Dow Rummel Village in Sioux Falls. Ann passed away in 2015. Marion passed away April 19, 2025.
He is survived by his children, Pat (Dale) Benson, Bev (Chuck) Van Hofwegen, Dawn (Duane) Beiswanger, and Brenda Thue; grandchildren, Jared Van Hofwegen, Zach (Laura) Benson, Chris (Kara) Beiswanger, Andy (Diana) Beiswanger, Jordan (Tate) Voss, Ethan and Chloe Thue; 7 great-grandchildren, and other extended family members.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; wife Ann; brothers, Andrew (Tena), and John (Toni); sisters, Florence (Harry) Van Kekerix, and Margaret (Hank) Reurink.
