Marion Williamson Obituary

Marion Hunter "Mooney" Williamson, age 102, departed this life on November 8, 2025 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was born on August 14, 1923, to the late Roy P. Sr. and Ella Irby Williamson in Norfolk, Virginia.

Mooney served as an aviator in the Army Air Force during World War II, stationed in Texas as a flight instructor. He harbored a passion for anything with a motor, which began with his singular NASCAR race in 1952, where he competed in his Hudson Hornet on a dirt track in Daytona. He relished the experience of constructing and piloting his four planes, as well as a lifetime of water skiing behind the meticulously crafted jet boats he built in his basement.

He was a dedicated member of the Civil Air Patrol and retired after 36 years as the bridge tender at the Great Bridge Lock.

Mooney is predeceased by his wife Betty Hardaway Irby Williamson, and brothers Roy Jr. and William "Buck" Williamson, and niece, Arlene White.

He is survived by his nephew, John Williamson; nieces, Alice Fentress, Sherill Overton, Vickie Spitzer, and Ona Lea Freeman.

The family wishes to thank the caring staff at (Beth Shalom) Maimonides Health Center for their years of excellent care. His graveside service will take place at 2:00pm on Wednesday, November 12 at Riverside Cemetery in Norfolk. Condolences may be left online at www.altmeyerfh.com.
