Marjorie Compton Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greenlawn Funeral Home North on Jan. 20, 2022.
Marjorie Ruth [Perkin] Compton, 92, was born to the Reverends Noel and Ora Dana Perkin in Springfield, Mo., on Sept. 4, 1929. She died peacefully in her home on Jan. 17, 2022.
Marjorie, known to many as Margie or Marge, was the middle of five children, and often teased that her parents were usually able to only take two children with them at a time-and they would take either the older two or the younger! However, the entire family went to England together in 1936 to meet and spend time with her father's family. They traveled on the maiden return voyage of the Queen Mary, causing her to miss her second-grade year of school.
She graduated from Springfield (Central) High School in 1947 and attended Central Bible College, now a part of Evangel University in Springfield, and Aquinas College in Detroit, Mich. She was employed at the Assemblies of God headquarters until her marriage to Troy A. Compton on Sept. 15, 1951. Immediately after marriage, she was employed by Hallmark in Kansas City. Over time, employment and volunteer opportunities took them to locations in Indiana, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Michigan before moving back to Springfield, Mo. in 1984.
During those years she greatly enjoyed working with a partner to own and operate a gift shop for several years in Burlington, Iowa, and then becoming a Taxpayer Specialist in the Problem Resolution Office for the Internal Revenue Service, working in both Detroit and Springfield over the course of 20 years, until her retirement in 1993.
Marjorie was also active in the Evangel University Auxiliary (now known as the Advocates) from its very beginning, and was a volunteer at Cox Hospital for many years. One of the things that brought her great satisfaction was being able to assist ministers in their tax preparation.
They had three children: Dr. Carole Eldridge of Galveston, Texas, married to Dr. Daryl Eldridge; Kay Logsdon of Springfield, Mo., married to Paul K. Logsdon; and Kevin Compton of Saratoga, Calif., married to Gayla [Masters] Compton; and a loved foster child, Alice Richards. She felt that her greatest accomplishment was raising what she considered her "wonderful children."
Marjorie, the middle child of five, was preceded in death by her parents, as well as three siblings and their spouses: Robert Murray and Marion [Thompson] Perkin; Frances [Perkin] and Eugene Bell; and Kenneth and Violet [Teuber] Perkin; along with her foster daughter, Alice Richards; a sister-in-law, Faith [Wilkerson] Perkin; and, a brother-in-law, Dean Compton.
She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Troy; her three children and their spouses; a brother, the Reverend Roger Perkin; and a sister-in-law, Constance Elmore Compton. She is also survived by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Melinda and Matthew Davis with children Mason and Marian; Mark and Leigha Eldridge with Delaney and Declan; Dana Mason with Moya; Derek and Amber Logsdon with Ivy, Amos, and Lilah; Elena and Matthew Veckman with William, Hayes, and Luke; and Cameron and Suzie Compton. In addition, she is survived by many nieces and nephews who loved their Aunt Margie.
All of heaven is now having their taxes done and sitting up straighter in their chairs.
A private family service was held on Jan. 20 at Greenlawn North. A memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 19, at 2 p.m., in the Chapel at Central Assembly of God, 1301 North Boonville Ave.
Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Compton Family Endowed Scholarship fund at Evangel University, 1111 N. Glenstone Ave., Springfield, Mo. 65802, or online at https://www.evangel.edu/advancement/.
