I to had Miss Grunewalder as my 1st grade teacher, Valerie, she was truly a treasurer to one and all of er students. I had recently been diagnosed as have muscular dystrophy and their was great debated as to whether I should continue in public school or "special ed" , which in those days none existing. She and many others in Florence Ave. were more than supportive of my public school education. I will always be grateful for the lessons she taught us and the kindness towards me and my classmates. A truly amazing person. Our prayers and condolences to her family.

Besides having her for first grade, my mom being a co-worker of hers, she always said she wanted to take me home in her back pocket. thing is, I weighed almost as much as she did! when I got really sick she sent fun things for me to do once I was able to sit up. last time I saw her was at my mothers funeral. at that time she still looked the same as when we had her..or close to it. that was '97. when I was in first grade she and her mom and dad let me visit them at their home while my mom worked Friday nights at 2 guys. her mom would make peanut butter cookies for the 4 of us to enjoy with milk as we watched wild, wild west. Such a sweet family and part of my 'warm-fuzzy' happy childhood memories. God bless you Miss Grunewalder

Following our 50th high school reunion, one of our classmates posted Ms Grunewalder's obituary. I remember her fondly. She was my first grade teacher at Florence Ave. School in 1957-1958. She was so kind and soft spoken. I especially remember her reading a psalm each morning following our pledge of allegiance. She had her favorites and I am sure we all had them memorized. To this day, I remember them. I remember crying one day because I didn't see my mom peek through the classroom window and Ms Grunewalder was so sweet and comforting. We were all blessed to have this fine lady provide us with a positive learning experience and unshakeaeable educational foundation. She was a treasure!
