Marjorie L. House-Mouton October 31, 1931 – November 4, 2025
A Tribute
After celebrating her 94th birthday on October 31st, Marjorie Lou (House) Mouton peacefully entered her heavenly home on the evening of November 4, 2025. She was the daughter of George Dewey and Sarah Elizabeth (Merselis) House of Phelps. She was one of their seven children. Her predeceased brothers Arthur Dennison (Helen) House, Kenneth William (Evelyn) House, sister Edna Mae (Willard) Beesley and her twin sister Lorena Belle (Charles) Aponte. Marjorie's sister and brother, Nellie Grace (Richard) Eggleton and Benjamin George (Mary deceased) House, are gratefully still with us. Marjorie was also predeceased by her husband, Kamiel Frederick Mouton, her daughter Karen Lou (Daniel) Lapresi and her son, Eugene Kamiel (Phyllis) Mouton and great granddaughter, SSgt. Alexandria Mae (Brandon) Morrow.
Marjorie is the Mother of Deborah (Kenneth) Herrmenn of Mt. Morris, Bonnie (Gary) Eider of Phelps, Kathy Mallaber of Palmyra, Tracy Hemen of Manchester and Kenneth (Shannon) Mouton of Phelps. A few days prior to her passing, she made a list titled "My Children". This list consisted of the names of everyone from her eldest daughter to her youngest great-great granddaughter. In all, there are 69 "Children" listed. Not to mention, her 21 foster children, her growing list of beloved nieces and nephews, the countless number of those whom she babysat, the children who called her "Nanny", the Developmental Disabilities Services Office individuals she cared for in her home, the elderly she cared for in their homes, the neighbors she served and more yet to be discovered. When asked what she wanted for her birthday, she responded, "People". Marjorie did not only passionately lead her family, but she also led a nation.
Marjorie had the unique ability to meet people right where they were at and make them feel comfortable enough to share parts of their life stories, of which she intently listened. She loved meeting people and hearing their life stories. New people were instantly no longer strangers.
Marjorie's favorite times were any time she spent with family whether it be one or hundreds at a time. She hosted the Annual House-Merselis Family Reunions since July 1983. Families from California, Virginia, Tennessee, Georgia, New Jersey, Maine, Ohio, Alaska, as well as all over New York answered her invitations and gathered. All cemented together by her love.
Amazingly, she found the time to enjoy oil painting, knitting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, crafts, diamond art, reading, birdwatching, raising pets, playing games, etc. She faithfully ministered to her siblings, children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews through her birthday card ministry. Mailing thousands of cards throughout the years.
Marjorie lived a life of sacrifice and unconditional love. When asked, "What religion are you?" Her response, coupled with her radiant smile, was "I'm not religious. I have a relationship with Jesus Christ". Ultimately, it was this relationship that she treasured the most. She taught that loving God and loving people were not two separate things, they must go together. For how can you love God and not love people? Or how can you fully love people without fully loving God? It was this relationship that she believed in and exemplified for each of us to strive to emulate.
Although Marjorie loved all Scripture, the ones she repeated several times a day during the last few days she was still with us is Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and He will direct your paths."
And so, her legacy lives on
There will be a "Celebration of Life" service held in honor of Marjorie on Sunday, November 16, 2025 at 2:00 pm located in the auditorium of Wellspring Church, 22 Teft Avenue, Clifton Springs, New York, followed by a reception in the Café. Her family will have a private graveside service on Monday, November 17, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Riverview Cemetery in Clifton Springs.
