Mark J. Boehnlein, 68, of Alexandria, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly at his home on March 23, 2025.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Mark was the son of the late Elmer and Agnes Boehnlein. He graduated from Baldwin-Wallace University and built a distinguished career in the real estate industry. On August 28, 1982, he married the love of his life, Joan Lampe, in Rocky River, Ohio. Their marriage, rooted in deep respect and shared values, spanned over four decades.

Professionally, Mark was a highly accomplished real estate executive, known not only for his technical expertise and strategic insight but also-most meaningfully-for his role as a mentor. He was deeply committed to developing others and was regarded by colleagues across the country as a generous teacher, thoughtful guide, and trusted advisor. Whether advising young professionals or supporting seasoned executives through complex challenges, Mark's steady leadership and willingness to share his knowledge made a lasting impression on many lives and careers.

Throughout his career, he held senior leadership roles including Chairman, CEO, President, COO, CFO, and Senior Vice President, and contributed as Secretary/Treasurer, Trustee, and Director for numerous companies and nonprofit organizations. Mark's influence extended across national and international professional organizations, including BOMI International, BOMA International, and the Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM). He served as a board member of BOMI International for a decade and as its Interim President and CEO in 2007. He also earned the Real Property Administrator (RPA) and Facilities Management Administrator (FMA) credentials and proudly shared his knowledge to help others do the same.

For the last 12 years, Mark served as Managing Director and Senior Vice President at Cushman & Wakefield in the Washington, DC metro area. He previously held leadership roles at Colliers Ostendorf Morris in Cleveland. His areas of expertise included property and facilities management, leasing, finance, building operations, receiverships, and corporate turnaround and bankruptcy trustee services. But it was his ability to lift others up-through guidance, example, and encouragement-that truly defined his professional legacy.

Outside of work, Mark had a deep love for cooking and baking, often preparing meals with a signature style and creativity that made every gathering special. He was also a skilled carpenter and gardener, always ready with a new project or repair, and a steady presence for those around him.

Mark was most proud of his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Joan; his son John and daughter-in-law Amanda Boehnlein of Arlington, Virginia; and his grandson and greatest joy, Brody Marshall. He also leaves behind his siblings: Barry (Marlynn), Susan (William Bainter), Virginia (Robert Schneider), and Jean (George Singer). Mark was a cherished brother and "Uncle Mark" to the Lampe family and will be remembered fondly by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, extended family, friends, and countless mentees who carry forward his wisdom and example.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 28, from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home, 1500 W. Braddock Road, Alexandria, VA 22302.

A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at St. Christopher's Church, 20141 Detroit Road, Rocky River, Ohio 44116. The family will receive guests beginning at 9:00 AM in the church's Gathering Room. Burial will follow at Lakewood Park Cemetery, 22025 Detroit Road, Rocky River, Ohio 44116. Arrangements in Ohio are being handled by McGorray-Hanna Funeral Home of Westlake.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mark's honor to the Poor Clares Monastery, 3501 Rocky River Drive, Cleveland, OH 44111.

My most sincere condolences to Joan and their entire family and friends. I am glad that my friend James Vincent Consolo invited me to the memorial service and sad that I never knew Mark. We were classmates of Joan at Rocky River High School and from the service and the program I learned what a great husband, father, brother friend and mentor Mark must have been. In the program there were quotes about Success and Leadership that I have shared with others and will carry with me. I pray the love of all will give you comfort and peace in regards to his passing. God bless.

Mark was more than just a mentor, he was a great friend as well. I am where I am today because he believed in more than I saw and pushed people to be their best selves. I am so lucky to have worked for and remained in touch with Mark for 8 years after moving away from DC. I will miss his friendship and leadership, and will always think of him, whenever I say "never a dull moment...". My heart breaks for and with you Joan, John, Amanda and Brody.

Mark - a one of a kind client and friend. Whatever the question, Mark had the answer and the detailed philosophy and background to back it up. I learned so much about real estate from Mark. He could take an otherwise dull subject matter and make it interesting. I worked with Mark for years and he was always a joy - even when facing the most contentious adversary. When we were working on a deal we spoke several times a day - and he always took the time to check in with me and see how I was doing in "real life". Mark was a great colleague - but more than that, he was a true friend. I will miss him more than words can express. Joan, John and Amanda - Thank you for sharing Mark with us. He made my world better and for that I will be forever grateful. Tara Gorman
