I was shocked to learn of Mark' s passing today, 1/31/22. I've known Mark for just shy of 40 years. We worked in the same building - the United States Steel Building and we became friends there. We played on the same softball team together for several years. Then a handful of years later, we were in law school together, and then we both served on the Duquesne Law Review.

Our paths crossed inexorably and for that I'm glad. I'm also sad because he had so much more to give to make our world better.

God Bless and God rest your soul my dear friend.

Love ya Man.

Your brother, Tempy

Mark was a good & honest man. I met Mark the first time when his father Judge Flaherty was running for County Commissioner and he was a friend of my fathers. I was happy to see Mark enter public office and sorry to see him leave it, but honesty is not in vogue. The world is a darker & colder place for his passing. My deepest sympathies to his family. See you in the Land of the Leal my friend.

I’m so saddened with the news of Mark’s passing. He was so genuine, kind, funny, and just a wonderful friend & classmate. I will never forget his endearing smile and laughter, always bringing a smile to anyone he was with. May he rest and be at peace. My heartfelt condolences to all of his family. We will all miss Mark. God bless.

Mark was a kind and thoughtful person whose presence definitely made this world a better place. He rarely talked about himself, and his face always lit up when talking about Anne and Deirdre. It was obvious how much he loved them and loved his life. He lived a good life but was taken from us too soon. We will miss his smiling face and talking with him on our walks around the neighborhood.

Our sympathies go out to the Flaherty family. I was lucky enough to meet Mark our first day at Duke together and we had been friends ever since. Mark made me a better person by modeling generosity, loyalty, and how to live a joyful life everyday. He was never afraid to be honest when things were going too far and he lived his faith when it was not always easy or in style. We have lost a good man. We are keeping all of you in our thoughts and prayers.

Sending prayers to the Flaherty Family. I remember watching Mark play soccer at Mt. Lebanon High School. He was a tough competitor but always a big smile on his face. More recently I ran into Mark and spoke with him. He was gracious and kind. I know the love he had for his family and he will be sorely missed. My deepest condolences.

So very sad to hear... my deepest of sympathy!
Mark, will be missed as one of the most gentle of men. I was blessed to meet and become a friend of Mark way back to the beginning of the Pittsburgh Marathon when I was a volunteer for the event.

His entire life he worked and devoted himself to doing the greater good and we were all blessed to have known him.

May God Bless his wife Anne and daughter Dee Dee along with the entire Flaherty Family.

God's Blessings,
Jane

Mark was a true original. We were freshman roommates at Duke and from the moment I met him I knew I was in the presence of an incredibly positive, vibrant person who saw the best in people and strove to enjoy life to the fullest. Mark was a patriot and dedicated public servant. The world was a better place for his having passed through it. May his memory be a blessing.

My deepest sympathy to the Flaherty family. I will always remember Mark with a welcoming smile & always a kind person. It was such a shock to hear of his passing. Mark & I met years ago as I have been on the Indiana Township Democratic Committee for many years. So needless to say we met through politics, no surprise.

To the family of Mark Flaherty,

May the light that Mark brought to so many shine upon you now and forever.

I fondly recall Mark coaching the Mt. Lebo girl's soccer team. To teens (or at least this one), he seemed so grown-up. Only now, it is apparent that he was only about a decade older than us. Starting at a young age and for decades, Mark enriched the lives of many others in the community.

Warm regards,

To the entire Flaherty and Smith family...

I am deeply saddened by Mark's passing as is my wife Ann. Mark and I shared wonderful times and experiences together. While we lost our contact for the years while my family lived in Ohio, we always had that special bond.

From our work together with the Pittsburgh Marathon and Larry Kazmanko, running the Olympic Torch, attending Olympic events and working together in Calgary in 1988 and having the WPa Sports Foundation together, and sharing our experiences with the likes of Freddie Fu, Kurt Angle, and world class athletes.

I loved the guy! I loved his mom and Dad and the Smiths.

My heart goes out to Anne and DeeDee...may our God embrace you all and carry Mark in His loving arms.

Peace and love...Mark and Ann (south) Malick

It was impossible to grow up in Lebo and not feel the light, love and laughter of the Flaherty family. So deeply saddened that Mark‘s light has been extinguished, but given the dedication and strength of his family and friends it will continue to live on. May you bask in the warmth of that light, rely on the love of all those who knew him, and cherish the sweet memories of the laughter and that contagious winning smile. Much love and sympathy to all.
