Mark Ledbetter

Dr. Mark Ledbetter was my Old Testiment professor at Auburn University. He was one of my most influential teachers. His class was eye opening, and helped me to see large parts of the Old Testiment in a whole new light. It's been over twenty years, but I still refer back to many things I learned in his class. He was enthusiastic, delighted in exhuming and exposing underlying truths, loved knowledge, and was a born teacher. I was looking him up to thank him for his influence in my life when I came upon his obituary.

Dr. Ledbetter was my professor at Auburn over 25 years ago. I had lots of professors but his name is one even my children know because I still speak of the discussions he held in class. I decided to Google his name today because just last night I was discussing him. I am so sorry to hear of his passing. My condolences to his family as I am sure he will be profoundly missed.

One of the kindest, most humble souls I have ever known . I met Mark and Susan in 2003 while waiting tables at the Back Burner restaurant in Macon, GA. I remember their baby girl . She was maybe a year old and was already eating smoked salmon lol. I was invited at their place in Macon and in Yatesville. Mark was also a talented chef . I just found out about his passing because they were on my mind and I googled his name. I am very sad about his passing . My condolences to Susan and Annie Grace.

I met Mark at the SHC conference in Louisville; I arrived to the sign-in table, and he made me feel very welcome -- at home, even. I attended the conference in Asheville and Savannah, and I'm certain that I was inspired to continue to attend these meetings because of that friendly welcome from Mark. I will forever remember his name and kindness . . . and good spirit.

Even though I haven't spoken to Mark in quite a while, I am devastated by the news of his untimely death. We were faculty colleagues at Millsaps. One day when I entered his office he invited me to sit down - he could see something was on my mind... I began to tell him my woes, and he interrupted: "Reach up on my bookshelf and pull out 'War and Peace' and behind it you'll find a bottle of bourbon." The last conversation I had with Mark was in Savannah. We "straightened" a room together. It was a quiet time, and the conversation lasted. I was retired and indicated that it would likely be my final visit to the conference. He listened probed and shared. I appreciate each of the conference times with him (Savannah, Richmond, Asheville, Durham). He was a dignified activist, a seer and a man.

A quiet, gentle, happy soul in the world. As a dear neighbor it was precious to look out the window and see Mark walking his dog Miller. Such soft and loving companions they both seemed to marvel at the simple joys in the world. The entire family Mark, Susan, Silas, Miller, Krista are a gift to our community... they've all always been the type of people it feels good to know are close by. Thinking of all of you dearly...

Mark was kind, selfless, thoughtful, and generous to a fault. He was a gift to all who ever crossed his path. I will always consider him one of my greatest blessings.
