Mark A. Leventhal, 63, of Alpharetta, Georgia, passed away March 4, 2026, at Emory Johns Creek Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Mark was born October 3, 1962, in Queens, New York, son of the late Walter and Helen (Hauser) Leventhal. He was a 1980 graduate of Jamaica High School and went on to attend the University at Albany, where he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics and statistics in 1984 and a master's degree in applied statistics in 1986.
Affectionately known as Mongo to friends and colleagues — a nickname inspired by the iconic character in his favorite movie, Blazing Saddles — Mark was known for his sharp intellect, quick wit, and generous spirit.
Mark built a distinguished career in analytics and data science, spending more than three decades with SAS Institute, where he rose from associate applications developer to principal analytical consultant. Over the course of his career, he became widely respected for his expertise in statistical analysis, data mining, predictive modeling, and credit scoring. Mark worked with organizations across a wide range of industries, including education, financial services, health care, utilities, transportation, and manufacturing.
Prior to joining SAS, Mark worked for the New York City Department of Education after beginning his career with Citibank.
Mark was an active tennis player and guitarist, an aficionado of classic rock music from the 1960s - especially The Beatles and The Who - an avid follower of all things Disney and Star Trek, and a diehard fan of the New York Mets, Giants and Islanders, as well as Syracuse University football, basketball and lacrosse. He was also involved in several service organizations, especially the North American Federation of Temple Youth, for whom he served many years as a counselor at the former URJ Kutz Camp in Warwick, N.Y.
In addition to his parents, Mark was also predeceased by two brothers, his twin, Eric, in 1999, and older brother, Jay, in 2016. He is survived by his partner of 16 years, Erica Cantarella Miller, and her sons, Noah and Ross. Though he never had children of his own, Mark was a devoted godfather and cherished presence in the lives of several of his friends' children, including Aaron, Daniel, and Charlie Kaye, Josh Goldhaber, Alex Friedman, Olive Cuttler, and Andrew, Logan, and Mikaila Robarge, all of whom also survive.
Mark will be remembered for his brilliant analytical mind, his sense of humor and his loyalty to friends and family. May his memory remain a blessing to the many whose lives he touched personally and professionally.
A service will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 15, in Beth David Cemetery, Elmont, N.Y. In lieu of memorial contributions, friends and family have set up a GoFundMe page to help defray the cost of funeral expenses. To donate, please visit https://gofund.me/d800a0112.
