Mark Mattison Obituary

Mark Mattison

LA CROSSE - Mark Mattison passed away unexpectedly at his home on Friday, April 15, 2022, at the age of 70.

He was born in Westbrook, MN on August 31, 1951, to Norris and Marion (Phillips) Mattison. Mark grew up a Minnesota farm boy, immersed in farm life, yet fascinated by that which surrounded him near and far, be it nature, science, history or the arts. He was excited by the givings of every season and relished the curiosities that came with each natural evolution.

Mark graduated from Lamberton High School in 1969, excelling in academics, music and athletics. He attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis, MN, moving on to earn his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in1976. In 1988 he received his International Veterinary Acupuncture Society Certification, practicing animal acupuncture locally, while lecturing across the United States and Canada.

He married his high school sweetheart, Wendy Gislason, on June 16, 1973, and together they built 48 years of shared experiences with their two children, cherishing their love of music, theater, art and outdoor adventures.

Mark practiced large and small animal veterinary medicine as a partner at the La Crosse Veterinary Clinic for 39 years. As he drove to countryside farms, he was captivated by the winding coulees with their rugged ridges, forested bluffs, and meandering streams. As a veterinarian, Mark was known for making time to build trusting relationships with his clients, taking genuine interest in providing the best care for each animal, large or small.

Mark was a life long fan of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, building enduring memories with his children and friends as they made their annual trek into the stillness of the wilderness, always greeted with unexpected challenges that fueled the stories of tomorrow.

The performing arts, along with a wealth of creative woodcrafting projects, were a source of inspiration throughout his years. Mark played various theatrical roles at UW/L Summer Stage, La Crosse Community Theatre, the Pump House and the La Crosse County Historical Society. But singing filled his soul. He grew up midst a family tradition of singing harmonious melodies with his father and 6 uncles at family and church events. In 1982, he and Wendy joined Wilma Scheffner's upbeat Rivertown Revue and Jazz 4, sharing in song for 26 years. Most recently, Mark sang with the La Crosse Chamber Chorale, 5th Chamber, and the First Congregational Church Choir.

Mark served on the UW-La Crosse Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and Boards of the Pump House, La Crosse Chamber Chorale, United Fund for the Arts, and First Congregational Church.

Above all, Mark was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mark is survived by his loving wife, Wendy; his children: Jon (Maria) Mattison and Kelly (Jeremy) Butler; six grandchildren: Noah, Macedonio and Nayeli Mattison and Adelaide, Kaia, and Reese Butler. He is survived by his four sisters: Mary Lynn Ditsch, Joan Reschke, Barbara Lagrue and Christine Mattison, along with Wendy's siblings: Jo Anne Noyes, Jon (Mary) Gislason, and Dave (Candy) Gislason. Mark was preceded in death by his parents: Norris and Marion Mattison, and his brother, John.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, May 14, 2022, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 2503 Main Street, La Crosse.

Wendy - I just heard about Mark from my brother Doug and the Lamberton news. I remember you guys as special people and have thought of you often over the years. We think of people like you guys as always being teenagers. At our age unfortunately we are running into more reminders of our time. It's good to read that you have family to support you at this time. You are in my thoughts.

Mark (along with Wendy) made several unique tangential contact with our lives centered around our lifelong involvement with dogs. Our Otterhound, Rascal involved us in the community theater's production of Annie.
Mark's expertise in acupuncture made him a well received presenter for a memorable program for the Coulee Kennel Club. my wife Becky and I send our love to the whole family.

Deep sympathy for the family of Dr Mark. He was "my" vet for many years on the farm. Large or small he took gentle care of them. My mare was his first acupuncture horse he treated. We were both elated when the results were so successful. I had the first mini horse that he had to float teeth - and soon made a small float from a full sized float. The mini-float, too, was a success. Being allergic to pesticides, he always appreciated the apples I would give to him from our orchard. He embraced all the challenges my "zoo" offered him - and there were plenty. The many stories I could tell from his dedicated care he gave my animals. Lots of laughs - and some tears too. Dr Mark showed genuine emotion - happy or sad. He was a true renaissance man. He is where he can sing loud and free and watch all his four legged friends dance and play. God Bless.

Mark was our animal family doctor for many years. I could see the love he had for each of his patients clearly. We always knew our beautiful pets were in the best caring hands possible. And I never missed a show at the pump house that he and Wendy were in with Wilma and co. The talent they shared with everyone had me both in tears and laughter. So thank you Mark for your gift of love for our animals and your gift of song for everyone. God bless you

Wendy, Jon, Kelly and family, my heart aches for each of you and what you must be going through. He was a great person in each role he willingly accepted. It was always enjoyable seeing him engaging with the arts around town, usually with Wendy by his side. But what I will most appreciate him for is the compassion he showed us when first he treated our dog, Haggis, for cancer and then came to our home to help her peacefully transition out of this world and into another. His amazing energy will be missed.

A skilled veterinarian, a compassionate, kind person, a joy to sing with in choir at First Congregational Church, a good friend, a loving husband to Wendy and a loving father to Jon, and Kelly-Mark was so full of life and gave us and others so many blessings. We are grateful to have known him and have missed him and spoken of him often since we moved away from the La Crosse area. Our hearts and prayers go out to you, Wendy, Jon, and Kelly. Very sorry for Wendy and family and thoughts and prayers for all connected to Mark's life. Too young. I had the great fortune of knowing Mark and knowing both the Mattison and Gislason families - My Mom and Dad were good friends of both and I knew Barb and Chris through school and was a friend and baseball player with David G. Very sorry for your loss and condolences.

I think Mark lived his best life - every day - like nobody else I've ever known. He was good with people, good with ideas, and good at every practical task you can think of. And he loved all of it. He brought out the best in me, and as far as I can tell, he brought out the best in everyone lucky enough to know him. Forty years knowing him wasn't long enough to hear all his stories.

He was, however, not good at complaining. Any time I ever heard him retell of an annoyance or difficulty, it always resolved into how it was overcome, or how it led to something funny. I will miss him very, very much.
