Mark Owen Shoger, 82, of Vancouver, Washington, passed away at home on Saturday, October 4th, 2025.
Born on April 20, 1943, Mark was the son of the late Stuart and Frances Shoger from Aurora, Illinois. Though he had a Midwestern soul, he developed a deep love for the Pacific Northwest.
Mark graduated from East Aurora High School in Aurora, Illinois, in 1961, and received a football scholarship to Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, Illinois. After college, he served in the Navy, spending most of his service aboard the USS Constellation during the Vietnam era. Following his military service, he earned a Master's degree in Ornithology from Illinois State before pursuing his dental degree from Loyola University, from which he also completed his Orthodontic residency program in 1978
Mark began his orthodontic career by establishing his first practice in Bloomington, Illinois. Upon becoming board-certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, and taking the Oregon dental boards, he started his Beaverton, Oregon practice in 1991. He retired in 2013. A highlight of his career was the privilege of instructing orthodontists in Europe and South America alongside his deeply respected mentor and renowned orthodontist, Dr. Norman M. Cetlin.
Beyond his passion for orthodontics, Mark embraced learning and developing new skills—a true life's motto. He was a skilled blacksmith, crafting Damascus knives and swords. A good friend introduced him to fly-fishing on the Deschutes River, inspiring him to become a builder of bamboo fly-fishing rods.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly, and sons, Ross Owen and Westley Ellis (Danica Trujillo); his sister, Carole Datta, and brother, Steve Shoger (Anne). Mark was preceded in death by his stepson, Marc Pugatchenko, and his sister, Nan Rockwell.
In remembrance of Mark's life, the family requests that charitable donations be directed to The Alzheimer's Association.
A private burial and an honor guard ceremony were held at Willamette National Cemetery on October 23, 2025. Riverview Abbey handled the arrangements.
