I had the honor of meeting Mark Takai at a union rally as few years ago. Of the list of notables that was to attend to campaign for votes, Mark was the only one that showed up. That alone garnered my respect. I've never been comfortable around political types but Mark came up and introduced himself and was so down-to-earth and easygoing that my friend, who is so shy, ended up blurting out My Mom voted for you. You could tell, he was humbled by her words. Instantly, he smiled at her kindly and said, Could you do me a favor? Can you tell your Mom Thank You for me? I really appreciate her support. That was the one and only time that I met him, but his impact has stayed with me long after that day. I cried when I learned of his passing. To his family, I'm am truly sorry for your loss, he was one of the great ones.

My most sincere condolences to his family for the loss of their beloved member. Although I never had the opportunity to meet him, Mr. Takai seemed to be a person whose actions moved the hearts of others. May the God of all comfort strengthens you to cope your grief, for He can become your Stronghold. Psalms 9:9.

Dear Takai family-
We voted for Mark for Congress in the election following our move here in 203. We are political junkies and quickly fell "in love" with him, recognizing the sincerity of his soul, and the quality of his work on behalf of the people of Hawaii. We prayed for him, along with you, once he made his diagnosis known. Pancreatic cancer is merciless, and few receive a reprieve. We knew, as you did, that he had been handed a death sentence - unless all of you were blessed with a miracle. Why no miracle? Oh, if only we knew the answer to that question? It will gnaw on your family, and ours, about Mark, and about all those others who have been ripped away too soon. We don't know. We won't know until we, like Mark, reach heaven. Know that he is at peace. Know that you will be reunited in glory! God bless you, and may the Holy Spirit comfort you during these difficult days, and the difficult nights to follow.
