Mark Tomczak Obituary

Mark Charles Tomczak
Edwardsville - Mark Charles Tomczak, 68, of Edwardsville, IL, was welcomed to his heavenly home on November 30, 2022.
Mark was born on May 29, 1954, in Erie, PA, son of the late Charles "Casey" Tomczak and the late Marie (Bojarski) Tomczak. He was proud of his college prep education at Cathedral Prep High School in Erie, and was honored to follow in his father's footsteps to Bradley University in Peoria, IL. After graduating with a degree in sociology, he dedicated 35 years to social work in the Missouri Department of Social Services - Children's Division. He spent his career defending the welfare of children in the city of St. Louis through foster care, adoption and other family services.
When Mark was 12 yrs. old, he was watching the Pittsburgh Pirates vs. the St. Louis Cardinals baseball game on TV, sorting baseball cards on the living room floor, when he sensed an inner voice saying, "You will marry a girl from St. Louis some day!" He doesn't remember who won that ballgame, but ten years later he won the heart of Bradley University transfer student from St. Louis, Maureen Ryan. When he asked her to marry "some day" she heard that same inner voice say, "You'll never have another friend this loyal." They married -- in St. Louis -- on May 17, 1980. Mark then became a Cardinal baseball fan.
They continued listening to God's voice as He spoke through 42 years together, learning to love each other and their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. God entrusted them with the lives of three sons and a daughter: Daniel Tomczak and daughter-in-law Casie (Warning) Tomczak of Indianapolis, IN; Deborah (Tomczak) Hanna and son-in-law Ronald Hanna of Peoria, IL; David Tomczak and son-in-law Andrea Priorelli of Brooklyn, New York; Michael Tomczak and partner Tyler Micheal Johnson, also of Brooklyn. Mark was humbly grateful to have three grandsons, George Leonard Hanna and Thomas Len Hanna, and Jack Charles Tomczak. Mark is also survived by his dear sister, Cecily (Tomczak) Woodward, and brother-in-law Louis "Woody" Woodward; nephew Christopher Woodward and niece Lisa Woodward, all of Cambridge Springs, PA.
Mark and Maureen tried to keep their eyes fixed on how Jesus braved the cross as written about in the book of Hebrews Ch.12 verses 1-3. They remained confident in their faith in God that their suffering had eternal significance. Mark spent his final hours on earth at Evelyn's House, a hospice facility, before moving into his Father's House, the one Jesus spoke about in the book of John Ch.14 verses 1-3.
Mark's viewing will be 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 8, 2022, at Weber & Rodney Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Edwardsville, IL 62025. A celebratory service will follow at 1:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Maureen, I was saddened to see that Mark had passed. I was a friend of his in Lovelace Hall at Bradley. We were on the same floor for three years and would do a lot together, like visit Terry Jones at his bike shop down Main street, go to B-Ball games together, and go down to eat at the cafeteria with a group of guys. He was a very pleasant good friend well liked on the floor. My condolences.

I was saddened to hear about Mark's passing through our HS alumni magazine. We attended Cathedral Prep together, lunch buddies and cheered together at most every football and basketball game. Unfortunately, contact was lost when we parted ways for college. I learned much about Mark's life through his obituary and I wish the best to his family and local friends.
