I first met Mark in 1972 when I started working at Stone Lab and we moved to Put-in-Bay. He was in high school and we played softball once a week. He was a good opposite field hitter with a great sense of humor--could laugh at himself and always made the games fun. Mark began working at Stone Lab in the late 70s and we rapidly learned that he could handle a lot of machinery and be counted on to quietly do his job. In his later years at the Lab I took advantage of the fact that he seemed to know everyone and could expedite some really challenging and complex tasks. I still see him chugging back and forth from Gibraltar at the helm of the Stone. While I can think of lots of nice things to say about Mark, I will always remember him as a truly nice person and a very humble person. I really value both of those traits. When he retired in August 2011, I was pleased to give him the Stone Lab Director's Award, "in recognition of your dedication, commitment, and personal contributions to our programs to improve Lake Erie and science education in Ohio. Your quiet work for over 30 years has been instrumental to our success and has benefitted thousands of people. We all owe you a sincere debt of gratitude."
