MOUNTAIN TOP — Marlene Houseman, 85, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Dec. 22, 2024, after an eight-year battle with dementia. She resided at Mountain Top Rehabilitation, where she was lovingly cared for and was fondly called "Kentucky Granny" because of her accent.
Marlene was born on March 11, 1939, in Closplint, Ky., to the late Alex and Pasty Frances Kelly. She was the first of ten children. At a young age, Marlene moved to Dayton, Ohio, where she made a life for herself. She had a long career in various grocery stores and was also a home seamstress. In 1979, she married Don Houseman, a devoted husband until he passed.
In her free time, Marlene was an avid gardener and loved to can fresh vegetables, she also loved to crochet gifts for family and friends, and enjoyed playing games such as Scrabble, where she would win by using her "hillbilly" words. She was a steadfast Christian and attended church at Mountain Top Baptist. Most of all, Marlene adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was proud of them all, and they brought her the greatest joy.
She is survived by her sons: Richard (Angel) Landis and Kenneth Landis; daughters Deborah (Scott) Warner and Frances (Daniel) McLean; her 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her beloved cat, Maui. She also leaves behind her siblings: Jimmy (Paula) Kelly, Bobby (Margie) Kelly, Dorothy Long, Mary (Harold) Bevins, Teddy Kelly, and Kathy (Rick) Noe.
She is preceded in death by her loving son, Freddie Landis; husband, Don Houseman; siblings: Joyce Bowling, Harold Kelly, and Kenneth Kelly.
A memorial will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, in McCune Funeral Services Inc., 80 S. Mountain Blvd., Mountain Top. Her funeral will be held in Dayton, Ohio, at a future date and time to be determined, from Newcomer North Dayton Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road, Dayton, Ohio, with interment at Dayton National Cemetery, 4400 West Third Street, Dayton, Ohio.
