Sarah G. Wilkins, class of '76

So sad to learn of Marlene's passing, but I share in honoring her. Marlene came to Wm and Mary in '74 when I was in my last two years as an undergrad art major, just in time to take several classes with her. I was immediately drawn to her dynamic vision for the ceramics program, and I well remember how hard she worked in the early Power Plant days. I went on to get an MFA, and though it was in painting, there is so much about that early 3D work in clay that feeds into it--particularly the alchemy involved in transforming elemental matter into works of expressive power. Marlene believed in her students and she believed in her own work. Balancing the two was her great strength, making her one of my most inspiring, most challenging professors ever. Rest well Marlene, and after that, may the fire of your spirit return again to touch the earthly plane.

When I am asked what teacher most affected my own teaching it is always you I name. Discovering your passing today makes me so very sad. You deserved longer on this earth.

I am sad to lose a generous and kind ceramic friend,
and I have fond memories of our trip to the Cinque
Terra when we were both teaching in Italy, long ago.
