Marlene Marie Horak Nellor
July 26, 1938 - December 3, 2024
Marlene Nellor, Beloved Mother, Mother-in-Law, Grandmother, Aunt and Friend, passed away at the age of 86 years old on December 3, 2024. Marlene was born in West Point, Nebraska as the second daughter of Lillian Dostal Horak and Venance Horak. Marlene grew up on her parents' farm, attended the local high school where she enjoyed playing the saxophone in the high school band and attending formal dances with her sister, Shirley.
Marlene received her Bachelor's Degree from Wayne State University, Nebraska. She loved children and worked as an elementary school teacher in her early career. Marlene married Howard Nellor and worked many years as a full time stay at home mother for her daughters Kara and Barbara. When Kara and Barbara were older, Marlene enjoyed a career as a medical transcriptionist. She and Howard later divorced.
Marlene was an avid reader - she enjoyed classic novels like Jane Eyre and many novels written by Jane Austen. She was always up to date on the latest news in Hollywood as well as current local and national events. Marlene attended the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Marlene enjoyed many special friendships over her lifetime, with weekly get-togethers at Y' Not Burgers on Hawthorne Blvd being one of her favorite things.
Marlene was very devoted to her family and friends. Her presence will be dearly missed.
Marlene is survived by daughter Kara Sunderland and grandchildren Nicholas, Clarissa, and Katherine Sunderland; daughter Barbara Smith, son-in-law Robert Smith and grandchildren Amanda and Claudia Smith; niece Julie Nelson O'Rourke and nephew Mark Nelson, and many dear friends.
