My wife Lisa and I became Marlin and Wilma's neighbor on Sugar Lake roughly 11 years ago. The first time Marlin saw us, after we purchased our lake home, my wife and I pulled up on a big black Harley Davidson Electra Glide. Sometime later, after Marlin and I got to know each other, he informed me that at the time he was thinking, "oh great, we're going to have biker gangs hanging out next door...there goes the neighborhood"...which we both had a good chuckle over.

Marlin was a kind and generous man of faith. I would occasionally help Marlin out with some small project and he would often bring over some fresh corn on the cob, or some other treat.

A few years back, we wanted to replace our garage with a larger one, but our lot size was slightly small per county building requirements. I approached Marlin and asked if he would be willing to sell me enough land to allow me to build the garage I wanted. Marlin pondered the idea, for maybe ten seconds, and said he would give us what we needed for one dollar if we covered the survey and legal costs. I don't think there are many people these days who would offer this up so selflessly.

Marlin was a very caring and generous with his children, all of whom I have gotten to know, to some extent over the years...all great people. Marlin's son, Steve, has been my "go to" guy when I need help or advice on a construction project...skills Steve gained over the years working for and with his dad.

Marlin always had a story to tell, such as how he met Wilma, his first new car, jobs he worked throughout his life, etc. The story that stands out, in my mind, which speaks to Marlin's loyalty and generosity is one about his brother, Dale, who passed a couple years back. Long story short, Marlin surprised Dale with a new house when Dale got out of the service, and if memory serves, a job working for Marlin as well.

My father passed many years ago, so I always enjoyed the time I spent with Marlin and considered him somewhat of a father figure to me.

My wife and I will greatly miss having Marlin and Wilma next door during the summer months.

I'm confident that upon Marlin's arrival in heaven that God greeted him with "Well done my good and faithful servant!"

Marlin, my friend, I will miss you greatly. May you rest in God's peace!

Love,
Paul Steffens
