Marlys Hilleman, age 90, of Le Grand and formerly of rural Marshalltown, passed away on the afternoon of January 2, 2026 in the comfort of her home under the care of Iowa River Hospice.
A visitation to celebrate Marlys’ life will be held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026 from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Marlys Anne Dougherty was born October 6, 1935 in Marshalltown, Iowa. She was the daughter of Leslie and Sarah (Gallentine) Dougherty. Marlys grew up on the family farm and attended school in Le Grand, Iowa. She was a graduate of Le Grand High School Class of 1952. She furthered her education by attending business school in Marshalltown.
After school, Marlys began working as a telephone operator. After graduation, she began working for Fisher Controls which would become a 37-year career until her retirement in 1998. She was united in marriage to Leon Hilleman. From their union, she gained a daughter, Cheryl and son, Scott. Marlys and Leon eventually separated. In her free time, Marlys was a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary in her younger years. She always enjoyed summer time where she would go boating and camping at Lake Rathbun. She would craft anything and everything and often would work on crocheting projects. As her grandchildren were younger, she always was sure to attend their sporting events. Additionally, she enjoyed riding motorcycles and working outside in her yard.
Those left to remember and cherish her memory are her children, Cheryl Mauseth and Scott Hilleman; grandchildren, Brad (Sarah) Mauseth and Brett Mauseth; great-grandchildren, Josh (Trinity) Mauseth, Jade Mauseth and Tori Mauseth; great-great-grandchildren, Mason and Jaxson Mauseth. Additionally, she is survived by her siblings, Bob (Karen M.) Dougherty and Dick (Julie) Dougherty; sister-in-law, Karen L. Dougherty; her companion, Bill Weuve and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Leslie and Sarah Dougherty; her brother Bill Dougherty; and niece, Kristin Dougherty.
