Marquel Spratling was born on June 20, 1974, in Pine Mountain, Georgia, to Peggy Spratling. He was a man who embodied love, loyalty, and dedication to his family and his faith. Marquel accepted Christ at an early age and was a devoted member of St. Peter CME Church, where he served faithfully in many ministries, including the choir, CYF (Christian Youth Fellowship), and working in the kitchen. Known for his unwavering commitment, Marquel had a reputation for never leaving church events until the trash was taken out and all the women were safely escorted to their cars. His servant's heart reflected his deep love for his church family and his desire to care for others.
Marquel cherished every moment spent with his loved ones and made it his mission to be present for them, no matter the occasion. Whether it was birthdays, graduations, weddings, or even funerals, Marquel was always there, often traveling great distances to ensure he could share in both the joys and sorrows of life with those he held dear. His first job, throwing papers on a paper route with his cousin and older brother, was just the beginning of a lifelong commitment to hard work and family. He could always be found lending a helping hand to older relatives, doing yardwork or whatever else was needed, always with a sense of purpose.
A proud graduate of Westport High School's class of 1992, Marquel formed friendships that lasted a lifetime. Known for his fierce loyalty and unwavering trustworthiness, he was the kind of friend everyone wanted by their side. After high school, he pursued higher education at Missouri Western State University, where he majored in Electronics Engineering Technology.
Marquel was a man of many passions. He loved engaging in spirited debates, often diving into deep conversations with anyone willing to share their perspective. He found joy in playing sports, doing legal research, and watching nature documentaries. His career was marked by meaningful contributions, including seven years in Financial Services at TransAmerica, several years mentoring 4th grade boys as a before- and after-school care provider at LINC in the Center School District, and several years as a dedicated caregiver. In his role as a caregiver, Marquel provided compassionate support to families in need, and his kindness and reliability left such a profound impression that many of those families maintained close relationships with him long after his services were no longer needed.
In 2023, Marquel was diagnosed with cancer, but he faced his illness with courage and determination. Over the next two years, he fought tirelessly, exploring every possible treatment with hope and resilience. On March 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family, Marquel peacefully departed this life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion.
Marquel was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Winston and Lucille Spratling; his uncles, Winston Spratling and Charles Spratling; and his first cousins, Jelani Scott, Weston Spratling, and Andre Jackson. He is survived by his children, Bryce Echols-Spratling and Anaya Echols-Spratling; his bonus children, LaShantris Smith and Aspen Brown; his mother and stepfather, Peggy Stamps Ross and David Ross; his significant other, Patricia Minter; his siblings, Dwight Spratling, Willie Stamps, Robert Stamps, and Shantris (William) Fondren; his step-siblings, David Ross, Alisha (Marqus) Rose, and Vanessa Ross; his grandchildren, Terry Williams and Cree Brown; his niece and nephews, Eden Fondren, Isaac Fondren, and Isaiah Stamps; seven maternal aunts, Marva Scott, Sandra (Clarence) Jackson, Caroyln (Jamie) Hill, Janie Copeland, Barbara Stinson, Cherwanda Lovett, and Janice Spratling; and a host of other relatives and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
