Marta B. Zych
1932 - 2025
Marta (Strawinski) Zych, 92, of Manchester passed into eternal rest on Friday, June 20, 2025. Wife of the late Stefan V. Zych and daughter of the late Jan and Amiela (Surowiec) Strawinski, Marta was born on December 31, 1932, in Poland.
Marta was a survivor of the Russian work camps of World War II, which she, her mother, and three brothers were brought to after the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. Tragically, her mother and one of her brothers passed away in the work camp. Towards the end of the war, Marta's father, who was serving with a Polish Army regiment attached to the British Army in parts of North Africa and the Middle East, was able to locate Marta and two of her brothers through the Red Cross. After reuniting with her father, Marta remained in the region and also attended school there. In the late 1940s, she and her family relocated to England, where she finished her schooling. While living in England, she met and married her loving husband, Stefan.
In 1956, Marta and her husband moved to the United States and settled in Manchester, where she was a homemaker and raised her two daughters. Later, she worked as an industrial sewist for Pioneer Parachute and as a seamstress for the Costume Shop in Manchester. Marta loved cooking traditional Polish foods like pierogies, golabki (stuffed cabbage), and barszcz (red borscht). When a family member or friend was sick, she also made the best chicken soup to help them feel better. Besides being a great cook, she enjoyed baking and was known to make a fantastic cannoli cake that her family loved.
Marta's hobbies included polka dancing with her husband, crocheting and making beautiful afghans for family members, playing cards, entertaining friends, and keeping up with the latest fashions. Marta prided herself on always being a stylish dresser. Marta was a beautiful person who loved her family-especially her great-grandchildren.
To cherish her memory Marta is survived by her daughters, Yvonne (Zych) Feder and Barbara (Zych) Nisyrios; her grandson, Luke Feder and his wife Jamie; her granddaughter, Stefanie DeLuca and her husband Tim; her granddaughter, Melina Nisyrios; and her great-grandchildren, Miranda Feder, Matthew Feder, Vincent DeLuca, and Grace DeLuca. Besides her parents and beloved husband, Marta was predeceased by her brothers Wiltold, Czeslaw, and Tadeusz Strawinski, her sister-in-law Lonia Strawinski, and her son-in-law Robert Feder.
Relatives and friends are invited to the John F. Tierney Funeral Home, 219 West Center St. in Manchester on Saturday, June 28, for calling hours from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m..
