Martha Jane Cherveny

Martha Jane Cherveny, 88, passed away Friday evening, August 18, 2023 with her son, Kevin and his wife, Annette, by her side. Earlier in the evening, she had been visited by other members of her family including granddaughters Molly and Kate Cherveny, daughter Kim Tapia, along with friends from Gentiva Hospice. Jane had been suffering from complications of Alzheimer's disease for many months and had been recently admitted to Winfield Senior Living.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday, August 24, 2023, at the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield. Private interment will follow at the Kansas Veterans' Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association and the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield, donations may be left in the care of the Shelley Family Funeral Home of Winfield.
Jane was born in Marion, Kansas on September 10, 1934 to Arthur Charles (AC) Kline and Martha Jane Harris Kline. She was number 8 in a family of 9 children. She was the last survivor of that family. Jane was best known as a businesswoman, owner and proprietor of The Wardrobe, a women's clothing store in downtown Winfield, for 15 years. She was also a well-respected caregiver of many. Jane also worked as the business manager for KSOK and manager of the Family Video for several years.
Jane served on the Winfield Chamber of Commerce Board and was head of the retail committee, she helped start the mentorship program at Winfield High School and was a key hospitality volunteer at the Walnut Valley Festival for many years. She was a founding member of the Winfield Community Theatre and loved music, she also enjoyed supporting Southwestern College events. She was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Winfield. Jane enjoyed playing bridge and cribbage, reading, and doing puzzles, gardening, and watching sports. She was well known for her fashion sense and her love of being a grandmother.
Survivors include husband, Wayne Cherveny of 68 years, son, Kevin Cherveny (Annette) of Lawrence, KS, daughter Kim Tapia (AJ) of Winfield, KS, Karla Hellstrom (Dave) of Denver, CO. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
