Martha Jane Fitch DeMond

Martha Jane Fitch DeMond, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, compassion, and joy.
Born March 27, 1947, in Cortland, NY, to Charles and Cora (Barker) Fitch. Martha grew up on her family's farm, but she knew from an early age that she was a "city girl" at heart. She attended Marathon High School in NY, and was most proud of her time as a KU Jayhawk graduating with her Bachelor's degree, and later a Master's of Social Work in 1999. She and her husband, Greg DeMond, were married 56 years, and raised their children, Lynn Ann Bachman (Todd) and Marcus DeMond (Ashley) in Kansas. Martha's greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren, Darin Bachman, Carilyn Jane Bachman, Jill Bachman, Taylor DeMond, and Lily Jane DeMond.
Driven by a desire to help others, Martha began her career as a social worker for Baptist Medical Center, where she helped those struggling with addiction. She was active in Toastmasters International achieving District Toastmaster of the Year in 2008-09. In recent years, she became a member of the Indian Heights United Methodist Church.
Martha found great pleasure in exploring new places and cultures, traveling to South Korea, Morocco, Italy, England, Abu Dhabi, Greece, and across Europe. One of her favorite experiences was swimming in the Aegean Sea near Athens. In addition to being a wonderful cook she enjoyed finding and trying new restaurants. An avid card player, she enjoyed playing pitch as well as sharing her enthusiasm for Texas rummy.
Martha will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched with her love, kindness, and grace. She will be laid to rest in Marathon Cemetery with a visitation and service to be held later this summer.
A celebration of Martha's life will be held at Matt Ross Community Center on Saturday, April 6, from 3-5pm, where family and friends are invited to come together to honor her memory and share stories of the remarkable woman who touched so many lives.
