Martha Tobitha (Smith) Helmick, 57, who had resided in Monterey, left for a trip to Kentucky with her sister, Flora Helmick, and Flora’s friend, John Keyton on August 3, 1973, the trio never met their destination.
After decades of unanswered questions and endless searching, Martha’s remains were recovered from the Kentucky River near Clay Ferry Crossing in Lexington, Ky., on October 22, 2016 during a Lexington Fire Department training exercise. It is assumed her passing was the result of automobile accident, which likely claimed the lives of Flora and Mr. Keyton as well.
One of ten children of the late Floyd and Emma Catherine (Smith) Smith, Martha was born May 3, 1916 in Job, WV. She was predeceased by her husband, Eli Helmick two months prior to her disappearance.
Those that knew Martha recollect how she enjoyed crocheting, writing letters, and loved to take pictures. Additionally, she was known to have raised terriers. Always close with her family, she spent much of her time visiting with her sister Beatrice Simmons, as well as her remaining siblings at the time. Above all, she was a loving soul, who liked to cut-up and laugh often.
Among the surviving family members are several nieces and nephews, who as children enjoyed the doting affection from their Aunt Martha.
Fifty-One years following her disappearance, Martha’s remains will be returned home to Highland County and interred in Wagner Cemetery, located behind the Church of God of Prophecy north of Monterey. The graveside committal service will be conducted 1 p.m., Wednesday, August 14, 2024 with Pastor Jerry Smith Officiating.
