Martha Hudson Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Officer Funeral Home, PC - East Saint Louis on Sep. 7, 2022.
LIFE REFLECTIONS
Community Activist Martha Ann Hudson, known by her signature white afro and glaring smile, passed peacefully from this life August 27, 2022 surrounded by her children at her home.
Martha was born September 4, 1942 in East Saint Louis, Illinois to Walter Lee and Mable Hudson. Martha attended East Saint Louis Public Schools.
Martha began her employment as a receptionist at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) in May of 1972 and retired after 39 years of service. Although she officially retired from DCFS in 2011, she informally continued providing invaluable services via her employment and community contacts. Her title may have been office assistant and her position receptionist but she wrapped her arms around every child as her own, assuming the responsibilities of several activities-surrogate social worker, child advocate, information and referral resource go-to, parenting coach, volunteer and many other important roles. She took those responsibilities seriously and ensured that children were fed, clothed, and protected during her years of service and long after her retirement. Her charity and dedication were well known throughout the state and she didn't miss a council meeting.
Martha attended Impact Church, St. Louis under the leadership of Pastor Ron Young where she served faithfully during her tenure. There will never be another like her ! She was truly one of a kind and irreplaceable.
She leaves to cherish her memory: her children, Walter Hudson, Andre "Spud" Hudson, Karen Hudson, Sherry (Calvin) Loving, Myrna Hudson, Narji (Jerry) Gully, Terrence Hudson; her grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and a host of lifelong family and friends. Last, but not least devoted friends, Eva Crockrell and Dr. Bernice Collins.
