Martha "Marty" Christy -Burt

Martha E. "Marty" Christy - Burt, 93 of Fremont and most recently, Kagawong Ontario, Canada, passed away Friday, May 3, 2024 at her daughter’s residence in Charleston, WV.

She was born October 4, 1930 in Fremont, the daughter of William and Mary (Bimer) Rothacker.

Marty was known for her artistic talent as a skilled glass blower with a penchant for vibrant color. To own a piece of her work is a treasure. Aside from her artistic skills, she worked for numerous employers in town, retiring from the office of Dr. Peterson and was Vice President of The Christy Knife Co., alongside her husband Earl Christy. She was an avid reader owning hundreds of books, a chocolate lover, and a rock and fossil collector. She was a long-time member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Fremont and St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Kagawong.

Marty enjoyed vacationing every summer in Kagawong, Ontario at the Christy Cottage, the tradition began in 1962 and continued until Earl’s passing in 2006. in 2008, Marty married Edward Burt of Kagawong, Ontario who lovingly added 6 more married children, 16 grandchildren, and 17 great grandchildren. She decided to make Kagawong her permanent home and obtained Canadian residency. Together they worked to maintain the beautiful and bountiful gardens, preserve the land and leave a minimal footprint.

Surviving are children: James (Terry) Frey, San Diego, CA; Earl Bradford (Jo Ellen) Christy of Melbourne, FL; Fabienne (Tom) Stout of Charleston; WV; Hal Randolph (Donna) Christy of Fremont, OH; Michael (Vickie) Frey of San Diego, CA; Nicholas (Gretchen) Frey of Elgin, IL, 27 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren; 2-great-great grandchildren, brother John Rothacker of Columbus, OH. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl Christy; grandchildren Michael Frey and Scott Caldwell; great-grandchild Eric Brown and sister Maggie Yobst.

A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, June 29, 2024 at 10:30 A.M. at Herman-Karlovetz Funeral Home & Crematory 900 North Street, Fremont, OH. Interment of ashes will take place at Oakwood Cemetery following the service.
