Martha was the ultimate professional. I worked with her for many years at Georgia Tech. She developed a variety of courses and workshops for economic developers around Georgia. The flagship Basic Economic Developers Course drew hundreds of people from around the country each year. Martha can be credited for assisting many of her economic development colleagues achieve the Certified Economic Development (CEcD) designation including myself. I was sad to learn of Martha's passing but also thought about the upbeat and positive energy she radiated. May she rest well and may her family be comforted in knowing the great impact she has had on others. Vivian Chandler

I was deeply saddened to hear of Martha Schoonmaker´s passing. Martha was not only a wonderful colleague, but also a great mentor and friend. During our time working together at Georgia Tech, she consistently inspired me with her generosity, wisdom, and genuine care for the people around her.
Her impact on me, and on so many others, will never be forgotten. I will always be grateful for the guidance she offered, the conversations we shared, and the kindness she showed in everything she did.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences. Martha´s legacy lives on in all the lives she touched.
Forever a warrior! Gone from our sight- but never from our fight!

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Martha during the early 2000s in Georgia Tech´s Economic Development Institute. A fun, smart, polite, and witty lady. We shared many Chick-fil-A sandwiches during lunch in our adjoining offices. She was a joy to work with . . . lots-0 fond memories. She will be missed greatly by many. RIP, Martha.

So sorry to read this; I am happy to read about the life she experienced and of her successes. I grew up in Arcadia, so all of us Arcadia kids had sort of a bond from our days as kids. Condolence to her family. Sincerely, Alan Hartley, 45 Arcadia (son of George and Peggy Hartley)

Martha and worked together in Economic Development for at 40 years. She was a fantastic colleague but most of all she was a dear friend. We were working mothers together at a time with very few professional women worked with young children. The support we gave each other was so important.
When Martha and Jim moved to DC we made sure to keep in touch with one another and whenever she came back to Atlanta we made sure to spend time together.
As her cancer(s) progressed I was so impressed how she handled each of her challenges with grace, courage, humility and a sense of humor.
I was blessed to be invited to her daughter´s wedding and so happy for her when her granddaughter was born. We were in touch regularly up to the end of 2025.
My heart goes out to her entire family as they navigate her loss.
It is the honor of my life to have known Martha as a dear friend. Peace be with her now.
Love,
Nancy
