Martha Nell White Slover

Martha White Slover died peacefully on March 4, 2025, exactly one month shy of her 97th birthday at her residence at The Stayton in Fort Worth, Texas.

Martha was born April 4, 1928, to J. Ray and Evalena Sanders White of Keller, Texas.

Martha is survived by her son, Clifford R. Thompson and wife Lori. Stepchildren Kris Slover Niblett, Kim Slover Flynn, and Kay Slover Black; grandchildren, Kaysa E. Thompson and Lars Clifford Thompson; Step Grandchildren, Casey Niblett, Devon Flynn, Parker Flynn, and Emily Black Roth and by Step Great Grandchildren, Charley and Ellie Roth. She is also survived by her nephew John P. Hall and wife Kit and great nieces Adrienne L. Peterson and LeRay E. Havard as well as great, great nephew Joshua P. Havard and great, great nieces Jessica E. Havard, Morgan R. Peterson and Leah K. Peterson as well as great, great, great, nephew James P. Havard.

First husband, Norman C. Thompson, second husband, Phillip J. Slover, sister, Mary R. White Hall, and Martha Gay Hall Callaway as well as her parents preceded her in death.

Keller, Texas was the place where Martha grew up. She graduated from Keller High School in 1944 at the age of 16 and from Texas Christian University in 1947 with a degree in sociology. Upon graduation, Martha began her journey through the working world with jobs in banking, various business organizations and being a private investor. She earned her Certified Financial Planner credential and worked in real estate for a period of time. 

Martha was an active person. Throughout her life she engaged in several activities that she thoroughly enjoyed including skiing and tennis. She met her husband, Phil, on the tennis court and they married in 1982. They spent the next 24 years until his death happily married, helping family and friends and having many adventures traveling the world. They visited all the continents and had the opportunity to experience a trip around the world.

She organized and arranged many family parties and events including the family tradition of a summer week at South Padre and springtime get togethers at the PK Ranch. Martha was a valued advisor to more than one generation of family members and was a treasured storyteller with many tales of family members from the past. All the family knew that if we needed help, Martha would be there. It was known by all that she would always tell the truth even if she knew that the person did not want to hear it. It was the same for her friends. She was loyal and truthful to everyone. Friends were the same as family in her mind. It was always good to have Martha on your side.

After Phil's death, Martha sold the home that the two of them had built and moved to The Stayton in Fort Worth where she lived the last 14 years of her life. There she made many new friends and had a lot of fun with her sister, Mary, as they both lived in the same building for several years. There she continued to be a force for good for family and friends alike. She gained a reputation as a wicked smart card player and was a sought-after partner the numerous card games played there. By her own testimony, she seldom lost at cards regardless of the specific game played.

Martha was a long-time member of the Inquirers Class at the First United Methodist Church of Fort Worth, a past board member of Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Fort Worth. She was a member of TCU Women's Exes and of the Brittain Society at TCU. Martha served for over 40 years on the board of Bourland Cemetery, Keller, Texas where she will be laid to rest, joining many family members including her grandparents, parents, husband Phil, and sister. She certainly paid her dues.

Visitation with family will be held at Lucas Funeral Home, Keller from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Funeral service will be Saturday, March 29 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church of Keller, followed by a private burial at Bourland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to either: First Baptist Church of Keller, general fund, Bourland Cemetery or TCU Alumni Association, the scholarship fund in memory of Martha
