Marvel Bullock DeVane

Marvel Bullock DeVane, 95, died Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at her home.
The funeral service will be conducted Saturday at 2:00PM at Cypress Glen Retirement Community, her home for the last 19 years. A private entombment for family will follow. The visitation will take place Saturday from 9:30-11:00AM at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Mrs. DeVane was a native of Robeson County and graduated from Chadbourn High School in 1946. She married Arthur Hammond and they moved to Baltimore, Maryland, to work at Glen L Martin Aircraft. Returning to her home state in 1955, Arthur and Marvel moved to Fayetteville and Rocky Mount to raise their two sons. After Arthur had a heart attack at 35 years old, Marvel realized she needed to be prepared to support the family, earning her Beautician's License. This allowed her to comfortably support her two sons when Arthur ultimately passed in 1964. She later opened her hair salon, Marvel's Beauty Shop, in Rocky Mount. Wanting to get more active, she took up dance lessons where she met James M. DeVane. They soon married, traveling the world, and driving a RV across the United States.
She was preceded in death by Arthur Hammond and Jim DeVane, as well as Graham Jefferson, her dear companion after Jim's passing.
She is survived by sons, Kenneth Hammond (partner Jeff Prestel) of Chocowinity, NC, and Scott Hammond (wife Kathryn) of Ashburn, VA; daughter-in-law Lilian Hammond (partner Joe Dedge) of Raleigh, NC; and stepsons James DeVane, Jr. (wife Janice) of Greensboro, GA, Lyle DeVane (wife Barbara) of Matthews, NC, and Dan DeVane of Miami, FL. She also is survived by three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren (with another on the way), three step-grandchildren, and four step great-grand-children.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donating to the charity of your choice. Some causes close to Mrs. DeVane include Beare Garden Animal Rescue where she adopted her loving cat Dolly, Alzheimer's Association, and the Cypress Glen Benevolent Care Fund.
