Mary L. Abey

1928 - 2022

Mary L. Abey, 94, of Evansville, WI passed away on Saturday, December 31, 2022 at The Heights at the Evansville Manor. Mary was born on January 18, 1928 in Milwaukee, WI to the late John and Gertrude (Greenberg) McDermott. After high school, she attended beauty college. She married Harold Abey Sr. on April 3, 1948. She enjoyed being a farm wife, working with Harold Sr. on their family farm, milking cows and doing fieldwork. Mary loved hosting holiday meals with up to as many as 70 guests. She would spend her free time, tending her big vegetable and flower gardens. She enjoyed playing Euchre in the neighborhood card club for many years. Mary and Harold could often be found in matching outfits going to local dances. She was famous for the many red Christmas cakes she made every year. She worked at the Piggly Wiggly and could be found passing out free samples. Mary liked to drive fast, although she never received a speeding ticket. They enjoyed traveling, especially their trips Hawaii and Switzerland. They also enjoyed visiting casinos Mary and Harold were always seen holding pinkie fingers in public. Her family was her pride and joy, they always came first.
Mary is survived by her children: Harold (Pam) Abey Jr., Maureen Kay (Steve) Hoffman, Mindy (Darrell) Larson, John Abey; 15 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law: Janice Horstmeyer. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Harold Abey, Sr, granddaughter: Megan Abey; Brother-in-law: Victor Horstmeyer.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 PM on Friday, January 6, 2023 at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Evansville with Fr. Lawrence Oparaji officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Friday at the church from 10 AM until the start of services. Ward-Hurtley Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
