Mary Schomer Obituary

Mary Ann Rose Schomer, 89, a longtime resident of Lastrup, MN, died at her home on January 7, 2026.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 31, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John Nepomuk Catholic Church in Lastrup, with Father David Maciej officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery will follow the Mass. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 30, and from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. on Saturday, January 31, at the Emblom Brenny Funeral Home in Pierz, MN. Parish prayers will be said at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the funeral home.

Mary Ann was born in Lastrup on December 15, 1936, to Michael and Mary (Voelker) Schomer. She received her early education at a two-room school in Lastrup and went on to graduate from Little Falls High School in 1954. After high school, Mary Ann completed a one-year teacher training course in Little Falls, which paved the way for her teaching career. She taught two years in country schools in Morrison County and from there went to St. Cloud State to get her Bachelor of Science degree in education. Mary Ann taught in elementary schools in Hibbing, Virginia (MN), and Forest Lake, as well as in Litchfield, MN, where she served as an educator for 33 years until her retirement in 1998.

Mary Ann lived a life of service. She devoted her time and talents to her family, her church, her students, and her community. She cherished all of her family and always remembered their birthdays with a card and a gift. She was a caring, dedicated teacher who, through her actions and words, taught kindness, generosity, and other values. She treasured the time she spent reading at Harmony House in Pierz. At St. John Nepomuk's Church in Lastrup, Mary Ann served as a Eucharistic minister, lector, collection counter, and leader of the Rosary. She enjoyed conversing with family and friends on the phone or in person, scrapbooking, traveling, sharing poems, and celebrating those she loved. Mary Ann had a knack for making and maintaining friendships and will be fondly remembered for her compassion and empathy towards others.

Mary Ann is survived by her siblings, Margaret (Ted) Boatman, Sister Carleen (Mildred) Schomer, OSB, and Richard (May) Schomer; nieces and nephew, Jane (Gerry) Sexton, Jill (Bob) Conner, and Michael (Nicole) Schomer; great-niece and nephews, Jennifer (Chris) Voigt, Josh Sexton, and Jake Sexton; and great-great-nephews, Benjamin, Blake, and Brooks Voigt.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Charles Schomer.

Mary Ann was a wonderful phone friend. I will miss hearing her voice. We had the best conversations. She was such an inspiration with her sharp mind and caring disposition. I know she loved her family dearly and she will be remembered and missed by many. We are so sorry for your loss.
