Although Mary lived a traditional life, she was one of the most progressive people I´ve ever met. She was able to create a name as an exceptional artist in the Anglo world while keeping her feet firmly grounded in her Navajo heritage and lifestyle. Her creativity was endless; her basketry exceptional. And her courage in expanding the images woven into traditional basket forms is legendary.
I have fond memories of being with Mary and witnessing her joy at trying new things. I remember seeing her sit side by side with Sally in massage chairs at a mall in Washington DC, smiling with wonder and amazement as the chair vibrated and gently massaged her legs. I also remember her clutching my arm as we descended on an arching, almost vertical escalator deep into the underground of DC´s subway system -- a scary trip for me but one that must have been horrific for her. As always, she carried on with extraordinary courage.
Mary´s mission seemed to have been to share the beauty and intricacy of Navajo legends and culture with her children, her community and the outside world. She enabled so many people around the globe to glimpse the rich heritage of Navajo belief. And she made sure her legacy would continue by teaching her children and others to weave and giving them the courage to carefully share the most beautiful aspects of Navajo life. The world is a better place because Mary had the courage to capture the images of her culture and share them with the world. I will miss her.
