Mary Ella (Ward) Camp, age 90, of Kingsland, Tx passed away Sunday, June 23, 2024 in Boerne, Tx. She was born in Imo in Searcy County, Arkansas to Jacob Cahal Ward and Flossie Sarah Agnes (Gates) Ward. She and John Elwin Camp, Sr. were married on March 13, 1951. They were blessed with 4 children: Deborah Ruth Camp married to Robert M. Kennedy and later to James F. Leugemors, John Elwin Camp, Jr. married to Rebecca Camp, Leon Derward Camp, and William Edward Camp.
She worked on her family farm and later as a waitress at Little Bob’s in Aransas Pass and Mrs. Pete’s in Port Aransas, Tx. In 1971, she took over her son in law’s paper route for the Corpus Christi Caller Times and for more than 26 years, she was the only paper carrier for all of Ingleside, Tx. She said it was the best thing she ever did. She took great pride in her work and was loved by the community. In her spare time, she loved cooking for family gatherings, gardening, canning, and covering hangars with yarn. Her cooking specialties included peanut brittle, cornbread dressing, homemade egg noodle & chicken soup, cream style corn, fruit salad, plum and cactus jellies, pickles, and anything her husband and sons caught while fishing, including shark! Nothing made her happier than spending time with family. She would do anything for anyone in need. After her husband passed and she retired, she moved to Carbon, Tx. She loved the farmhouse and land she bought for almost 20 years until a wildfire burned the whole town in 2022. She relocated to a retirement community in Kingsland, Tx and loved to play train and bingo with her new friends.
Mary is survived by her son, William Edward Camp of Fort Myers, Florida; grandchildren: Robin Michelle (Kennedy) Titzman and Allen of Boerne, Tx, Deborah Lynn (Camp) McCray and Orrin of San Marcos, Tx, Paul Everett Leugemors of Bryan, Tx, Ashlie Andrea Camp of Anacortes, Washington, and Nicholas Ryan Camp of Ingleside, Tx; and great grandchildren: Devon Titzman and Shelby, Lauren Titzman, Caleb Gerberg, Axl White, Brooke White, & Dayna White.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents, all of her many siblings, her husband: John Elwin Camp, Sr., and 3 children: Deborah Ruth (Camp) Kennedy Leugemors, John Elwin Camp, Jr., and Leon Derward Camp, and 1 grandchild: Nathaniel Karl Gerberg.
Mary had a strong faith in Jesus and always knew she was loved. She encountered so much loss in her life in losing her husband, 3 children, a grandchild, her home, and all of her possessions, but she stayed strong and always trusted that “It’s God’s will." May she rest in peace.
A memorial service to celebrate Mary’s life will be held on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at 10:00 am at Charlie Marshall Funeral
