Mary Candida Obituary

Mary T. Candida (Barranco), 84, of Schenectady, New York, passed away on December 22, 2022, after a brief illness.

Mary was born in Schenectady, New York, to Amelia (Volino) and Joseph Barranco. A lifelong resident, Mary graduated from St. Joseph's Academy and worked for the late Dr. William E. Felson, O.D.

Mary, also affectionately known to all as Grammee, spent much of her life volunteering and enjoying her family and friends. For many years she was a tutor for children with learning disabilities in coordination with the Schenectady Child Guidance office at St. Anthony's School. She was an assistant Girl Scout Leader at St. John the Evangelist for many years.

If you drive by her house, you will see Terry Bradshaw's Jersey hanging in the window. A zealous Steelers fan, she cheered for the Celtics and Red Sox when football season ended. She was known to say, "It wasn't safe to be around me when any of my teams were playing!"

Mary loved to read and introduced her grandchildren to the library at a young age. She loved to see her grandchildren play sports and attended many basketball games, lacrosse games, rowing events, and dance and choir programs. Her gardening skills were impeccable, and she took pride in flying the flag daily. Few people knew she was a fantastic bowler. She prayed for so many and loved everyone with her entire being.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brothers, Michael and John Barranco, and her sister Kay Barranco. Survivors include her children Karen (her late husband Chip) Lombardo, Joe (Celeste) Candida, and Amy Candida. There are four grandchildren: Amelia and Jack Lombardo, Victoria and Anabella Candida, her brother Joseph Barranco, and several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Joseph's Church in Schenectady, New York on Saturday, January 7 at 10 a.m. Interment will be held privately amongst family at a later date.

Contributions in Mary's memory can be made to The Schenectady City Mission or St. Joseph's Church in Schenectady.
