Mary L. Cavanaugh Cowley, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away on November 17, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on August 16, 1948, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Mary dedicated her life to her family and community while finding joy in her passions and service to others.
A lifelong member of the Catholic Church, Mary was an integral part of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Benton, where she volunteered in the Adoration Chapel for 25 years and was also a long time member of the choir.. Her spiritual commitment shaped her character and inspired those around her.
In addition to being a devout Catholic, Mary was a Master Gardener, and could often be found tending plants in her yard and garden. She also loved bird watching, and kept her husband Robert busy hanging feeders all around her yard. Mary found delight in puzzle books such as Sudoku, loved putting together jigsaw puzzles, and had a fondness for television game shows, with "Wheel of Fortune" and "Jeopardy" being among her favorites.
Mary's caring nature extended to all she met; she was always willing to lend a helping hand and exhibited a truly servant-hearted spirit.
Mary cherished her family above all else. She was a devoted wife to her loving husband of 54 years, Robert Cowley. Together they nurtured a beautiful family, including daughters Shannon Pittman (and husband Austin) of Maumelle, Arkansas, and Melissa Cowley of Benton, Arkansas. Mary was also a proud grandmother to her grandson Andrew Pittman. Her presence was a constant source of love and support at band concerts and softball games for Shannon, gymnastics meets for Melissa, and later at band concerts and swim meets for Andrew. She also leaves behind her sister, Elizabeth "Betty" Rau of Minnesota, as well as many family members and friends who love her dearly and will forever hold her memory close to their hearts
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Margaret (Gagnon) Cavanaugh, and her brother, James Cavanaugh.
Her legacy of selflessness, devotion, and love will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing her. The family appreciates the kindness and support shown during this time of grief, and they invite all to join them in celebrating Mary’s life and the indelible impact she had on everyone she encountered.
To honor her memory, a Rosary will be held at Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church in Benton on Monday, November 24, 2025, at 6:00 PM, followed by a Mass on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, at 10:30 AM. The church is located at 900 W Cross St, Benton, AR 72015.
