Mary Pennington Thomas Chalmers CHARLESTON - Mary Pennington Thomas Chalmers of Charleston, SC died Nov 8, 2025, after a prolonged illness. She was born in Columbia, South Carolina, to Amelia Clarkson Fowles and Lovick Thomas (the clerk of the South Carolina Senate). Mary Penny enjoyed growing up with her cousins in Columbia, Pawleys Island, and the Carolina Sandhills. She went to St. Mary's College in North Carolina and graduated from the University of South Carolina. She taught art and science for many years in Charleston and completed her masters degree in Library Science, eventually retiring as a school librarian. She loved the arts and gardening. She leaves behind her sister, Sophie Kreps; her niece, Stuart Anderson and nephew, Duncan Kreps; two children, Amelia Fairfax (Todd), and Alec Chalmers (Maryanne); and five grandchildren (Jake, Cameron, Alec Fairfax and Anna ,David Chalmers ). The family wishes to thank her many caretakers for helping her to stay in her home. Her Memorial Service will be held Saturday, November 15, 2025, in the J.
