Mary Dunham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hahn Funeral Home on Dec. 1, 2025.
Mary Jo Dunham, born November 15, 1957, in South Bend, Indiana, to Earl E. and Frannie (Hanley) Smith, passed away peacefully on November 27, 2025

On September 28, 1996, she married Ronald Dunham. Though later divorced, the two remained close, and Ronald continued to lovingly serve as her caregiver. Mary Jo dedicated her life to caring for her family and her home, taking great pride in being a homemaker and truly loving every moment of it.

Mary Jo is survived by her former spouse and devoted caregiver, Ronald; her sons Monte (Ashley) Smith and Justin (Sara) Shields; and her beloved grandchildren Vanessa, Stevie, Zachary, Rilynn, Rayna, Raidyn, Jason, Jordan, and Honor. She also leaves behind two cherished great-grandchildren: Kennedi, affectionately known as "Her Mary", and a new great-grandbaby expected in April.

She is also survived by her brothers Randy and Marty Smith. She was preceded in death by her sisters Rhonda Wiley and Deborah Lynn Smith, who passed away in infancy.

Mary Jo had a tender heart for animals and deeply loved her dogs. She especially cherished her little Nay Nay, Mary and Zay. She enjoyed scrolling through TikTok and Facebook, finding joy in small moments, laughter, and connection. She loved to shop, but most of all, she treasured time spent with her grandchildren, who were the light of her life.

Over the years she took in many of her son's friends and gave them love and guidance thus becoming affectionately known as " Mama Jo". Mary Jo's warmth, humor, and gentle spirit will be deeply missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM, in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W 8th St. Mishawaka. The funeral service will immediately begin at 1:00 PM, also in the funeral home. Burial to follow in Crumstown Cemetery, 60995 Crumstown Hwy, North Liberty.
