Mary Flanders-Hurst ObituaryMary DeLois Flanders Hurst was born September 10, 1945, the seventh child of Artis and Oreda Flanders in Tarrytown, GA. She slipped into eternal rest on March 21, 2025, after a long illness. She was affectionately known as Lois by her family and friends. As a child, Lois loved to recite poems and sang in the church choir at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Soperton, GA.
Lois attended school in Tarrytown and Ailey, GA. She played basketball and was a powerful, swift guard. She had a joyful and playful childhood, marked by close connections within her small, tight-knit Tarrytown community. Lois would give birth to her oldest son, Michael Flanders, and, with the promise of better opportunities, she moved to Connecticut, where she would reside for the rest of her life. As she settled into northern living, Lois's family grew to include her other beloved children, Garry, Kimberly, Cheryl and Steven. She also married her life partner, Hosea Hurst. A beloved mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Lois was always a dedicated worker, with years of service at various establishments, including R.R. Donnelly and Mohegan Sun.
Lois was an excellent cook, homemaker and sports fanatic. She enjoyed cheering on her beloved New England Patriots and the University of Connecticut women's basketball team. Lois had a "green thumb" cultivating a variety of plants in her home and enjoyed reading a good book. Her house was always open to her family and friends, hosting many family holidays, parties, and get-togethers.
Lois was predeceased in death by her parents, husband, sons Michael and Garry, daughter Kimberly, brothers Willie Rufus, Otis, and her sister Marvy Cowser. She leaves behind her legacy through her daughter, Cheryl, and youngest son, Steven, as well as her grandchildren Anthony, Ronald Jr., Tyron, Davonte, Tishawn, Tashara, Karissa, Wesley, Marilyn, and Dominick, along with a host of great-grandchildren. Also cherishing her memory are her sister, Jewel; brother, Frank (Marie); and her sister, Mozella (Michael).
A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2025 at 11a.m. at Madry Temple Church, 25 Manwaring Street, New London. Family and friends may view at the church at 10a.m. until time of service. Interment will be held in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London, CT.
