FLIPPEN, Mrs. Mary Ellen - Age 78, passed away Monday, February 13, 2023, at Hurley Medical Center. Family hour 10:30 AM Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church, 1035 E. Carpenter Rd., with funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Pastor Elect Alfred Harris Jr., officiating. Interment Sunset Hills Cemetery, G-4413 Flushing Rd. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:30 AM Tuesday. Mrs. Flippen will lie in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd. and may be viewed from 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM Monday with family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends. Mrs. Mary Ellen Flippen was born on August 22, 1944. The daughter of Era and Bessie Moore in
Philadelphia, Mississippi. Mary accepted Christ at an early age and attended 12th St. Church of God. On February 2, 1971, she became a faithful member of the New Jerusalem Full Gospel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Odis A. Floyd and the late Pastor Patrick Sanders Sr. Mary was a member for over 50 years and she loved her church. Mary was a Nurse Aide at Flint General Hospital for many years. She had a love for Gospel Music and praise and worship. Mary loves crossword puzzles, playing bingo, watching westerns and old movies. Mary stayed picture ready making sure her hair was styled and jewelry always poppin. Mary was an amazing mom and grandmother and was affectionately known as "Madea, Mamacita, Shawty Love, My Baby, GA-GA, and Girlfriend" by her children and grandchildren. Mary was loving, compassionate, encouraging and a mother figure to many. Mary made sure family and friends felt welcomed. Although Mary was short in stature, when she spoke people listened and embraced her wisdom. Mary was the "Hidden figure" of the family and she was the "go-to" person for remembering special events and dates. Mrs. Mary Ellen Flippen leaves to cherish her memory: 3 daughters, Tracy Flippen of Flint, Sherry (Phil) Hodge of Flint Township, MI, and Nichelle (Clifton) Gallon of
Murfreesboro, TN; 3 grandchildren, ReNeisha Johnson, Jasmyn Barnes, both of
Murfreesboro, TN, and Caleb Hodge of Flint Township, MI; sister, Bernice Abston of
Grand Blanc, MI; brother, Rodney (Kathy) Harris of Flint Township, MI; special nephew, Ray (Lisa) Flippen; god-daughters, Debra Lawson, LaShantel Robertson, Shelia Barnes, Angela Toliver, Kim Davis, Laura Kindle, Shuntay Lakes, and Sabrina Copeland; god-sons, Pastor Kenneth Gillard, Terrance Green, Donald Pittman, Jonathan Taylor, and Van Pollard; god-grandchildren, Tja Page, J'Lynn Williams, and Brandon Barnes; special cousins, the Moore families, Barbara Kirkland and family, the Mayberry, Batts, and Backstrom families; special friends, Jeff and Arjetta LaValley, Estelle Lever, Mother Doris Hawkins, Minnie Ozier, Ann Rankin, Ms. Ola Dotson, and Ms. Selma Collins. Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, William Flippen; parents, Era and Bessie Moore; siblings, Lovell, Mattie, Carrie Mae, Telvin, John and Lovert.
