Obituary published on Legacy.com by Harness Funeral Home on Nov. 12, 2025.
Mary passed away peacefully on November 6, 2025. She was born on July 9, 1935, in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to Glenn and Edna (Meider) Huffcutt and was the eldest of their five children.
Throughout her 90 years, Mary lived a life full of adventure, curiosity, and connection. She played many roles here on earth: daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and was soon to become a great-great-grandmother. Beyond her family roles, she was also a loyal friend and explorer of the natural world.
Fiercely independent by nature, Mary built a life on her own terms. She had a gift for forming deep lasting connections and cultivated many friendships over the years. Her endless love for the outdoors brought joy in every season. She loved hiking mountain trails, biking quiet paths, kayaking serene waters, snowshoeing through fresh powder, waterskiing under summer sun, and even windsurfing with fearless energy. She took great pride in staying physically fit and active throughout her life, continuing well into her eighties: a testament to her strength, vitality, and determination. Her enthusiasm for adventure inspired all who knew her.
In her later years Mary moved to
Buffalo, Wyoming, where her heart was forever drawn to the beauty of the Big Horn Mountains she loved so much. This is where she felt most at home. Mary found a love for photography. Through her lens as a talented photographer, she captured the spirit of the wilderness she so deeply loved. Her photographs, featured in wildlife magazines, local newspapers, and calendars, reflected her deep reverence for nature's quiet wonders.
Mary's passion for community ran just as deep as her love for the land. She gave generously of her time and heart, volunteering with the Cloud Peak Chapter of Wilderness Watch, the Powder Pass Nordic Ski Club, and serving on the Buffalo Trails Board. She also lent her hands and kindness to Meals on Wheels, Friends of the Library, and the Happy Valley Gift Shop, among many others.
Mary cherished her time spent with dear friends. Her family is profoundly grateful for the magical friendships she formed over the years; bonds that filled her days with warmth, purpose, and belonging. Her family extends their deepest gratitude to all who supported her over the past year, for your friendship, your visits, and your love. A heartfelt thank you also goes to the staff at Aimee Holt for the compassionate care you provided.
Mary is survived by her son, Dan Poehls (Marcy), four siblings, four grandchildren, and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Glenn and Edna (Meider) Huffcutt.
