Mary Lou Hanners, of Jackson, passed away Sunday, November 9, 2025, on her 79th birthday, at Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau.
She was born November 9, 1946, in Cape Girardeau, to Weldon and Amelia Brucker Slinkard. She was a 1964 graduate or Oak Ridge High School. She and Hobert D. “Deon” Hanners were married January 22, 1965. They had been married 38 years when Deon passed away May 1, 2003.
Mary Lou worked several years as a cutter at the shoe factory in Cape Girardeau. Other employment included D & K in Cape Girardeau and Jackson Bait and Tackle in Jackson.
In 2019, she was saved and baptized at the Cape County Cowboy Church.
Loving survivors include two daughters, Dawn Ann (Scott Klingeman) of Jackson, and Tammy Jo of Cape Girardeau; adopted daughter, Shelby Cooper of Cape Girardeau; grandsons, Justin Shumpert of Jackson and Nathan (Emilee) Shumpert of Jackson; great-grandchildren, Aaleeyah, Brantlee, and Charlee; sisters, Ruth Ann (late Gifford) Hobeck of Jackson, and Wanda Lee (late Donald) Stone of Jackson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings, John David Slinkard, Jim Slinkard, and Sharon Slinkard; and Deon’s father, Jay D. Hanners.
Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, November 14, 2025, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. The Rev. Jim Matthews will conduct the funeral service at 2 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery.
If considering a memorial contribution, the family suggests the Cape County Cowboy Church or the American Diabetes Association.
