Mary "Darlin" Laurel Hendrix, 87, of Elgin, Texas, passed away peacefully at home on July 12, 2025. Mary was born in Austin, Texas, on October 25, 1937, to James Laurel Gray and Zona Mae Ellis Gray. She married her beloved husband, “Big John” Hendrix, in 1957, and together they raised three children in an Austin home filled with love and laughter before moving to Elgin.
Mary worked as a beautician and as an accountant for over 25 years at LCRA. She was known for her creativity, kindness, and strong family values. Her passions included horses, art, and family. Having a deep love for wild birds, wildlife, and red poppies. She cherished time spent with loved ones at Inks Lake and in her close-knit Austin neighborhood.
Mary is predeceased by her parents, her husband, her brother Mike Gray, and daughter-in-law, Debbie Herwig-Hendrix.
Mary is survived by her children, Holly Hendrix, Johnny “Love” Hendrix, and Barney Hendrix and wife, Deborah; her sister, Jean & Vince Ferrer; her niece, Sandi Castro; her nephew, Vincent “Bubba” Ferrer; her grand-niece, Jordan; and her grand-nephew, Anthony Castro. She also leaves behind her only granddaughter, Erica Hendrix, and her beloved great-grandson, Kevin Hendrix, along with many other family members and friends. Last but not least, her four-legged partner in crime, Rowdy.
Mary is remembered for her joyful spirit, her warm heart, and the deep bonds she created with everyone she loved. She will be profoundly missed by all who knew her.
Family and Friends will gather for Visitation at Elgin Funeral Home, Sunday, July 20th, from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM. A Celebration of Mary's Life will be conducted at Elgin Funeral Home, Tuesday, July 22nd at 10:00 AM with Bro. Joshua Hausladen presiding. Interment will follow at the Hendrix Family Cemetery of Red Rock, Texas, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband - all are welcome to bring a shovel to participate in the burial, honoring her memory with this meaningful gesture. Following the interment, all are invited to return to Elgin for BBQ and fellowship, where we will continue to celebrate Mary’s life with shared stories, laughter, and remembrance.
