Mary Howard Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Gregory B. Levett and Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory - South DeKalb Chapel on Sep. 2, 2025.
Mary Howard, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away at age 79 in Atlanta Georgia. Born October 30, 1945, in Harlem, New York, to Perry and Catherine Levan, Mary was the ninth of ten children. A devoted nurse for 36 years, Mary cared for countless patients and volunteered tirelessly to deliver meals to seniors in her community. Even after retirement, she continued to support children at Trey Whitfield School in Brooklyn NY, where her son and many grandchildren attended. Mary was the loving wife of the late Colin "Spot" Howard. She is survived by her children Rania Sanders, Ralph Samuels, Alfred Samuels, and Aaron Howard; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; her sisters Sarah Levan and Alethea Levan; and a large extended family. Mary was known for her deep love, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to family. She had a special gift for making everyone feel cherished, whether through her thoughtful cards, her legendary home-cooked meals, hours spent on the phone with loved ones, or her playful spirit that earned her the affectionate nickname "Tomato" in childhood. She cherished family unity above all else. Her words of guidance- "Pray on it," "Get it done," "I love you," and "Honor thy mother and thy father"-reflect a life lived with faith, purpose, and care for others. Mary's warmth, humor, and generosity touched everyone she met, leaving a lasting legacy of love and family. Services entrusted to Gregory B. Levett & Sons Funeral Home, 4347 Flat Shoals Parkway, Decatur, GA 30034.

If it weren't for you, Mary, its a possibility that I may have never learned how to cook your husbands' and my Island dish, cou cou. Because Colin craved that dish, and since you were the southerner, who didn't know how to prepare it, you gave me the special honor to do it. It was a hit, but I couldn't have done it without the assistance of my beloved mother (over the phone from . It served you for two days. You have now transitioned to take your rest, along with other family members.
