Mary Lois Magness, a beloved member of her community and devoted caregiver, passed away on December 5, 2025, in Lubbock, Texas. Born on September 11, 1934, on a farm in Hale County, Texas, Mary was raised in Idalou, where she built a life that reflected her dedication to family and her passions.
After graduating from Idalou High School, Mary Lois pursued her passion for hairstyling at Jessie Lee's Beauty School in Lubbock. Her career as a hairdresser began at Orene's before she became the proud owner and operator of Vogue Beauty Shop, serving her clientele with distinction for over 20 years. Her talents and commitment to her craft forged lasting connections with those she served, many of whom became lifelong friends.
Mary Lois was cherished not only for her professional abilities but also for her warm and nurturing personality. She was a wonderful and dedicated caregiver to her parents, Sam and Mary W. (Jernigan) Magness, her sister Louise Pinc and husband Charley, and her sister Elizabeth Robbins and husband B.J., all of whom have preceded her in death.
In 1992, Mary Lois moved to Lubbock, where she continued to engage with her community. In 2022, she took residence at the Carillon Retirement Community, forming deep bonds with the staff and fellow residents. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the caring staff at Carillon House, First Floor North, who became a second family to Mary Lois, as well as to UMC Hospice of Lubbock for their unwavering support and guidance during her final days.
In addition to her career and caregiving, Mary Lois had a zest for life. She enjoyed playing cards and dominoes, often joining in games with various groups, including at the Lubbock Senior Center. Her vibrant spirit and love for games created much joy for those who shared those moments with her. She was a member of the Idalou Baptist Church and in later years, a member of Southcrest Baptist Church.
She is survived by her nephews, Joe Robbins and Jim Robbins and his wife, Beverley; her niece, Cheryl Dunn and her husband, Robin; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who will fondly remember her.
A graveside service to honor Mary Lois will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at Idalou Cemetery in Idalou, Texas with UMC Hospice Chaplain, Colleen Eppler, officiating. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, Texas.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to a favorite charity.
