Mary Margaret Hawxhurst Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Rausch Funeral Home - Owings on Feb. 11, 2026.
Life Remembered and Cherished
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother,
Mary Margaret (Cunningham) Hawxhurst, who departed this life on December 9, 2025, at
the age of 90. Mary was a cherished sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend
whose kindness, warmth, and unwavering support touched the lives of all who had the
privilege of knowing her.
A Life Well Lived
Born in Wyano, Pennsylvania, on July 15, 1935, Mary grew up with a deep passion for
music and singing. She dedicated her life to her family as a devoted wife and mother,
always striving to make a positive impact on everyone she met. Mary's generosity and
compassion extended far beyond her family, reaching into the community and leaving a
lasting legacy of love and service.
She was best known for singing in the choir at her church and for her participation in the
Patuxent Pearls Choral Group. Mary and her husband Bill shared a love of travel and
enjoyed several trips abroad. For a time, they were also considered "snowbirds,"
spending part of the year living in Florida.
Mary adored her grandchildren, who will forever remember her as their "Mamie." Above
all, she will be remembered as a bright and shining light-someone who embraced
every challenge with a smile on her face and laughter in her heart.
Family and Loved Ones
Mary is survived by her children: Mary Sue Grzybowski (Mike) of Delray, West Virginia;
Christopher Hawxhurst of Columbia, Maryland; and Joseph W. Hawxhurst (Stacy) of
Prince Frederick, Maryland. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jonathan Hawxhurst, Steve Grzybowski (Jessica), Nicki Gotsis (Sam), Karli Hawxhurst, and Katie Hawxhurst, as well as six great-grandchildren. She is further survived by her sister, Lois Starenchek of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, along with many nieces and nephews who will forever cherish the memories shared and the lessons she imparted. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Willard A. Hawxhurst, on December 23, 2019; her parents, William and Helen Cunningham; her stepmother, Clara Cunningham; her sisters, Eleanor Ferguson (Bob), Dorothy Kessler (Richard), Shirley Chandler (Bob), Glenys Waters (Jack), Nancy Morrison (Glenn), and Gayle Hammer; her brother, David Cunningham (Betty); and her in-laws, Joseph W. Hawxhurst (Martha) and Robert Hawxhurst (Carolyn). A memorial service is planned for May 9, 2026 at 11:00 am, Norvelt Union Church, 2339 Mt. Pleasant Rd, Mt. Pleasant. PA 15674.
