I don't know how to say goodbye to someone who has been my friend since first grade. Mary and I went to school together for 12 years, had birthday parties, went on field trips, sang in glee club, and danced in the yearly high school play. After college, I went to her wedding, she introduced me to my future husband, and she was in my wedding. We raised our children and always looked forward to our lunches or dinners to catch up.
Mary was a giving person, who was there for her family and friends. She loved her gardens and the hummingbirds, one of which I was lucky enough to hold in my hand once when we had a pool day. Our trips to Longwood were very special, and I think it was our Happy Place for years.
I will miss her company, her sense of humor, her curiosity about the world, and her love and generosity. My world will not be the same without her in it, but all the memories will have to suffice for now.
