Mary Lou Mitchell
Age 94 of Horseheads, NY, passed away after a stroke on June 30, 2023. Mary Lou was born February 28, 1929 in Olean, NY, to the late Glenn and Georgia Bell Cornwell. She is survived by her daughters Shari Root of Breesport, Sandra (John) Tupper of Breesport, Darlene (Jeffrey) Houghton of Lowman and son Douglas Mitchell of Breesport; 8 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren; brother Ronald (Shirley) Cornwell of Gillett, PA, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Ward, granddaughter Amber Tupper and her cockatiel Sunny.
Mary Lou graduated from Elmira Free Academy and Miss Beardsley's Elmira Business School. She belonged to the Breesport and Horseheads Fire Auxiliary for many years and the Horseheads Art Club. In her younger days she would go with her father when he serviced the airport beacons from Elmira to West Virginia and climb the towers with him. She would ride the train from Elmira to Olean to visit her aunt and uncle.
Mom loved to watch the birds and flowers, playing rummy, doing crafts, sewing, and painting. She loved being with her children and grandkids and their families.
Mary Lou was always on the go and loved being with people, she made many friends. Special ones Bea Smith (her partner in crime) and Margaret Pickering. Along with many loving and caring people over the years who took care of her at home and everyone at Bethany Manor. Special thanks to Tracie, Jamie, Perry, Cliff, Kim, and Megan. Thanks to everyone who took care of mom to the end.
