Mary Ann Long Mohrmann, 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 6, 2025. Born January 9, 1932, in Shelby, VA, to Marshall Edward and Mary Margaret Rhodes Long, Mary Ann, known as Gaga to her grandchildren, was the matriarch of the family. She was a steady, loving presence who shaped generations with her strength, wisdom, and warmth. She is preceded in death by her husband, Henry Frederick William Mohrmann, MD (Bill); her grandson William Pendleton Mohrmann (Penn); her siblings: Marshall Edward Long, Jr., William Hamilton Long, Kenneth Bragg Long; and her parents.

She is survived by her children: Janet Schumacher, William (Sharon) Mohrmann, and John (GiGi) Mohrmann; her brother Robert Rhodes Long; her grandchildren: Leigh, Kurt, Pieter, Jenni, Drew, John, Michael, Sarah, and Ann Taylor; her great-grandchildren: Charlotte, Luke, Addie, Hallie, Rives, (Emilia), Heath, Nathaniel, Skylar, Harrison, Harper Louise, and Penelope; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She had many close and life-long friends, whom she enjoyed entertaining. All those who knew and loved her will remember her laughter, self-deprecating humor, and pound cake!

Mary Ann was a natural-born educator who loved children and teaching. At the age of 18, she began teaching children displaced by the creation of the new Shenandoah National Park. She was proud to have continued on to earn a B.S. in Elementary Education from Madison College (James Madison University) in Harrisonburg, VA. As a true early childhood educator, she instilled values of generosity, honesty, and inclusion. She retired having taught First Grade for 25 years.

Of the many honors and awards she received, she enjoyed sharing the experience of having presented the first United Nations flag in 1950 to President Truman and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in the White House Rose Garden.

Mary Ann had a gift for making those around her feel cared for through her stories, hugs, or simply her presence. She made everyone's life richer. Mary Ann's legacy will forever live on in the stories we share and the values she instilled in her family and generations of students. We will miss her dearly, and will honor her always.

A Memorial Service is scheduled for January 10, 2026, at 11am at the Orange Presbyterian Church.
